Eco-Club, NSS and YRC organized the
celebration of "World Environment day”. A formal function was arranged at 11
am. Dr H Lakshmikantha Regional officer, Kaataka State Pollution Control
Board, Udupi was the chief guest for the program. The Director and the
principal addressed the students and highlighted the need for environmental
protection. The measures taken by the management to ensure a green campus were
put forth. Faculty members Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar M.K, Ms Reena Rodrigues and Mr
Vinoothan Kaliveer coordinated the program. Around 150 students were present
for the program. The key points of the talk by Dr H Lakshmikantha were the
importance of topsoil and the role of water in the
whole ecological system. He emphasized the need
to reduce the use of chemically active waste. Consumption
of food should be related to the intensity of the work done was one thing that
was interesting to the students. The talk promoted the recycling of waste. At last, a few tips which can be
practiced in daily life were shared to save Mother Nature.
As part of COVID-19
relief activities, St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) distributed 10 Kg of
Rice and School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya (SSWRN) gave away Groceries to 140
registered street vendors of Mangaluru on 15 May 2020 at School of Social Work
Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru. The event was facilitated by the Centre for Development
Studies and Education (CEDSE).
The members of the management of SJEC and SSWRN were
present along with the representatives from CEDSE and the Office Bearers of
Street Vendors Association during this meaningful event which not only
highlighted the valuable contribution of street vendors but also upheld their
dignity as human persons.
St
Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, is conducting its Annual NSS
Special Camp at Govt Higher Primary School, Puttige, Moodbidri from 20-26 January 2020, which was
inaugurated Mr Umanatha Kotian, MLA of Moodbidri Constituency.
In
his inaugural address, he said that participants should utilize the opportunity
of attending the camp by leaing from the surrounding environment. He went
onto say that the experience they receive from the camp will help them to lead
their life successfully. He mentioned that student days are the most important
days in life and inculcating the skills of working hard will surely lead to
success in life.
Sri
Adigal Anantha Krishna Bhat, Priest at Shree Somanatheshwara Temple, Puttige showered
blessings on the gathering by praying for the success of the camp.
Mr
K P Sucharitha Shetty, Jilla Panchayat Member of Dakshina Kannada district was
the Chief Guest at the inaugural. He said that the present young generation is
the future force of the country. He called upon the students to identify local
problems and help the local community by providing technical solutions.
Dr
Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, while congratulating the students for
participating in the camp, said that along with offering service during the
camp, the participants also must also lea from their experiences.
Rev.
Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director of SJEC, in his presidential address said
that students should follow the principles of being human before anything else.
While wishing for the success of the camp, he thanked the authorities for
giving the opportunity to organize the camp in the school.

Manager of SJEC, Mr Rajesh K, Coordinator of NSS Unit at SJEC and Mr
Ajithanjaya Kumar MK, Chairperson of the Community Group at SJEC were also
present on the occasion.
The
six-day camp is being organized by SJEC with able support from the team
comprising of faculty members and students of the college.
To mark 150th birthday celebration of
Mahathma Gandhi, NSS Unit and Community
Engagement Group of SJEC conducted Swachatha Abhiyan in the villages of Navoor Grama
Panchayat. Navoor Grama Panchayath is
one of the adopted village by the Institution for Community services.
47 students of NSS unit along with 7 faculty members
participated in the program. Grama Panchayath
of Navoor village extended their full cooperation in conducting this program. On
this occasion, a special meeting was organized by the Grama Panchayath, in this
meeting Mr Ajithanjaya Kumar detailed about the plans and actions of the community
services planned to take up in the village. PDO of Grama Panchayat along with
President and members of Grama Panchayat thanked the institution for conducting
Swachatha Abhiyan in their village.
Program
started with NSS anthem sung by NSS Volunteers followed by welcoming the
gathering by Ms Aniceta, Student Coordinator of NSS unit.

Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash
D’Souza inaugurated the program by planting a sandal plant. He said that not
only planting a sapling but taking care of the planted saplings is also the
responsibility of the student volunteers.
Dr Rio D’Souza talked
about the importance of planting of saplings and this should be done by
students even after joining to jobs.
Ms Aniceta proposed the
vote of thanks.
On the
occasion of the installation ceremony of the district cabinet of Lions
Inteational, a Go Green event was organized at St Joseph Engineering College
(SJEC), Mangaluru, on 3rd August 2019. This event was jointly hosted by
Community Engagement Group, Eco Club and NSS wing of SJEC.
The
event was witnessed by several eminent personalities from Lions Club which
included Lion Ronald Gomes-District Goveor of Lions Inteational, Lion HT
Seetharam, Lion Madhava Ullal, Lion Prashanth Pai among others. The event was
also attended by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza-Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr
Rohith D’Costa-Assistant Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza-Assistant
Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza-Principal of SJEC along with staff and
students of the college.
During
the event, Lions Inteational handed over plant saplings to the authorities of
SJEC as a symbolic gesture of launching their Go Green initiative.
Lion
Ronald Gomes stressed the importance of trees to maintain a clean ecosystem and
thanked the management of SJEC for supporting Lions Inteational in their
venture. Dr Rio D’Souza said that the college is proud that the Go Green event
is taking place at the campus and urged all students to contribute in keeping
the environment in good health.
Post a
brief gathering, all the dignitaries came together in planting the saplings on
the college campus.
The
Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Division of DK
district organized an electoral awareness Human Chain from Talapady beach to
Sasihitlu beach on 7th April 2019. Student members of Electoral
Literacy Club (ELC), AICUF, NSS and many students from St Joseph Engineering
College (SJEC), Mangaluru, participated in this event.
Mr
Sudheer, Panchayath Development Officer (PDO) of Neermarga, was assigned the
responsibility of leading SJEC students in Chitrapura-Hosabettu cross beach
which was the location assigned to SJEC by SVEEP Division. The programme began with
Mr Sudheer addressing the students on importance of voting in the democracy. He
insisted the students to bring awareness about voting among the common people
in their native places and surroundings.
He also led the students to take voters pledge. Around 200 students
participated in the event as SJEC showed its solidarity in supporting the
efforts of district administration in spreading the electoral awareness. Dr Rio
D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, Dr Sudheer M, Dean- Student Welfare of SJEC, Dr
Prakash Pinto, Dr Vincent Crasta, Dr Ramananda HS, Mr Sathyenda Bhat and Mr
Vinoothan Kaliveer from SJEC were present and participated in the event.
The NSS Special Camp of St
Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru was held from 19th
January to 25th January 2019 in the premises of St Sebastian Higher
Primary School, Hosabettu, Moodbidri. The Inauguration ceremony was held on 19th
January 2019. The camp was inaugurated by Mrs Rita Cutinha, Member of Taluk
Panchayath and President of the Standing committee, Mangaluru Taluk Panchayath, by lighting the lamp. She
assured wholehearted co-operation for the success of the camp. Rev
Fr. Santosh Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Hosabettu,
Moodbidri, graced the occasion. The program was presided by Rev Fr Rohith
D’costa, Assistant director, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru.
Mrs Precilla Pinto, Headmistress, St Sebastian Higher Primary School,
Hosabettu, Mr Basil Colaco, Vice President, Holy Cross Church Committee,
Hosabettu, Mr Manohar Cuntinha, Secretary, Holy Cross Church Committee,
Hosabettu, Sr. Laveena, Superior, BSDP Sisters Congregation, Dr Sudheer M,
Principal in charge, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru were
the guests of honor. There were a total of 52 participants along with staff
members. The programme began with invoking god’s blessings. Mr Rajesh K, NSS
programme officer welcomed the gathering. Rev Fr Santosh Rodrigues in his speech
stressed about the importance of social service and congratulated the students
for attending the camp. Rev Fr. Rohith D’costa, in his speech motivated the
students to actively participate in the camp. Dr Sudheer M, Principal in
charge-SJEC, briefed the students about the role of NSS in nation building and
inspired the students to actively involve themselves in social service. Ms
Nidhishree proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Nandini compered the programme.
Shramadhan was conducted
during the special camp. Volunteers had cleaned the bushes on either side of
the main road, near to the school entrance. They also cleaned the premises of
the church. As part of the Shramadhan activity, the soil was dug for rain water
harvesting and recharge pits were created in the church premises. During the Special
camp, yoga sessions were held for half an hour. Flag hoisting ceremony was organized
every day in the moing. In the afteoon there were lecture series arranged
for the students. Snake Kiran shared his knowledge about snakes and enlightened
the students about the importance of snakes. Mr Ronald D’souza, Aquatic Bio
systems Mangaluru shared his experience about fisheries. Students also had a
visit to few of the famous places in Karkala, namely St Lawrence Church, Attur,
Koti Chennaya theme park and Gomateshwara temple Karkala. Students also visited
Hosabettu village and interacted with the villagers. At the end of each day, games
and cultural programs were conducted by the students. All the participants of
the camp came forward to showcase their talents. Valedictory programme was held
on 24th January 2019. Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal SJEC appreciated the
students for being part of the special camp and suggested to come up with
similar programmes in the future. Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director SJEC
appreciated the students for attending the camp even though they had holidays. Rev
Fr. Santosh Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Hosabettu, Moodbidri
appreciated the students for their discipline and dedication during the special
camp. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Chief of R&D SJEC was the guest of honor. Mr Ananth Kamath welcomed the gathering. Mr
Rajesh K proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Nandini compered the
programme.
As part of the
Communal Harmony Campaign Week from 19th to 25th November
2018, flag stickers were distributed and voluntary donations were collected
through the NSS volunteers of our college. A sum of Rs 4605/- was collected. A
cheque of Rs 4605/- with number 092253 dated 10/12/2018 was issued for the
same.
NSS
SJEC unit & Department of Physical Education had organized a cleanliness
drive on 17th November 2018 from 8:00 am till 11:30 am. The formal
programme was held outside the college main gate. Apeksha & Ankitha Rai
delivered the NSS prayer song. The inaugural program was addressed by Dr.Rio
D'Souza, Principal SJEC. In his speech he stressed about the importance of cleanliness. He inspired the
students to actively involve in the Swachata Abhiyan. He also appreciated the
NSS prayer song. He congratulated the students for taking part in the
programme. Loshika compered the programme. More than 60 volunteers representing NSS, YRC &
Department of Physical Education participated in the cleanliness drive. The
cleaning was done from Mangalajyothi till the Church complex. Bushes and grass
near to the college entrance were cut by the volunteers. College had provided
one grass cutter with operator and two workers to help the volunteers. Further,
a tipper and all the necessary requirements to clean the surroundings were
provided by the college. All the volunteers actively participated in the
cleanliness drive. Drinking water facility was provided during the activity.
All were provided with refreshments. Sneha Bazar sponsored cold drinks to the
students.NSS coordinator Mr. Rajesh K and Ms Divya Pai, Ms Vaneesha V
Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director and Ms Prajwal D’Souza, Mr
Clavian Miranda guided the volunteers.
A talk on healthy diet by Dr Sanjana Shenoy, HOD of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics at Besant Women’s College, Mangaluru was organized by NSS UNIT of SJEC on
22/10/2018 in Spoorthi Hall at 3:00PM in ACADAMIC BLOCK 3.The student
coordinator Mr.Chethan welcomed the resource person.Dr Sanjana Shenoy started
with the presentation which was lively and interactive. She said that diet and health go hand in hand. She spoke about basic components of healthy
lifestyle diet, healthy eating habits, common problems arising out of
a flawed diet. She said that the eating habits of most Indians were the one
practiced by our forefathers and they were quite healthy unlike today’s
generation. Her motto is to “Eat Healthy and Stay Fit”. About 200 students
attended this programme. The programme was coordinated by NSS coordinators, Mr Rajesh K and Mrs Divya
K.Pai.
As
part of Milan 2018 Cultural programme, food and games stalls were arranged by
NSS Unit of the college. Around 20 students were actively involved in arranging
the stalls.
The activity of Planting of saplings, undertaken by NSS volunteers of St
Joseph Engineering College Vamanjoor, was held on 7th September 2018.
It was a memorable evening as fun blended with a cause of protecting nature. The
venue for planting the saplings was near girls hostel SJEC.
The event started at 4pm with a NSS prayer by Ms Ankitha and Ms Apeksha. Following
this was inspiring words about protecting nature by, Dr Rio D’ Souza, Principal
SJEC. Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC also appreciated the
initiative taken and encouraged to have more activities and camps by NSS. Assistant
Director Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa was also present and appreciated the work.
Different kinds of plants like banana and mango were brought in prior.
Many pits where dug to plant these saplings with the help of housekeeping
staffs. The activity was inaugurated by the management by planting a sapling,
adding manure and watering it. After the inauguration, a vote of thanks was
given by Nidhishree B of 4th year E&C. After the formal
function, the NSS volunteers planted saplings, added manure and watered them. Students
enjoyed the activity and understood the importance and happiness they get in
planting saplings. The event ended at around 5.00 pm. At the end, refreshment
was given for everyone present.
The master of ceremony
for the evening was Ankitha Shetty of 4th year E&C. The
arrangements needed for the activity was done by the house keeping staff of
SJEC. NSS Coordinator Rajesh K, President Chetan Ramesh of 4th year Mechanical
and the treasurer Dheeraj Hegde of 4th year Civil took initiatives
to coordinate the entire event.
NSS and AICUF conducted drives to collect cash and materials for the
victims of floods in Kodagu district and Kerala state on 20th and 21st
August 2018.The amounts and materials collected have been disbursed as shown
below.
Cash Collected: Rs
1, 05,600/- has been handed over to the Diocese of Mangalore flood relief fund
on 25th August 2018.
Cheque: A Cheque
of Rs 5000/-has been handed over to the Diocese of Mangalore flood relief fund
on 25th August 2018.
Materials
collected have been handed over to the D.K District Administration on 22nd
August 2018.
The NSS and YRC (Youth Red Cross) wing of SJEC-Mangaluru had organized a fund raising campaign to provide financial assistance to help Mr Abhishek Prasanna, S/O Late Mr Gurudatt and Mrs Jayanthi, aged 15 and pursuing his education at NMPT - Panambur. Abhishek was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia-Blood Cancer). A total sum of Rs 1,38,650 /- has been raised from the College. Rev. Fr Joseph J. Lobo, Director - SJEC handed over the cheque to Mrs Jayanthi on 12th April, 2017. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis – Principal-SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director-SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal-SJEC, and Mr Godfrey E. Pinto, HR Manager – SJEC, along with all the NSS & YRC volunteers were present on the occasion. SJEC prays for the speedy recovery of Abhishek.
On the same day, an amount of Rs 10,000/- was handed over to Mr Shekar from Nitte, as financial support for his physically challenged children, Prajwal and Pratheeksha. The amount was raised as proceedings from the Food and Games Stalls that were installed by NSS and YRC during the SJEC Annual Athletic Meet Go-For-Gold 2017 on 16 February 2017.
