The NSS Special Camp of St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru was held from 19th January to 25th January 2019 in the premises of St Sebastian Higher Primary School, Hosabettu, Moodbidri. The Inauguration ceremony was held on 19th January 2019. The camp was inaugurated by Mrs Rita Cutinha, Member of Taluk Panchayath and President of the Standing committee, Mangaluru Taluk Panchayath, by lighting the lamp. She assured wholehearted co-operation for the success of the camp. Rev Fr. Santosh Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Hosabettu, Moodbidri, graced the occasion. The program was presided by Rev Fr Rohith D’costa, Assistant director, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru. Mrs Precilla Pinto, Headmistress, St Sebastian Higher Primary School, Hosabettu, Mr Basil Colaco, Vice President, Holy Cross Church Committee, Hosabettu, Mr Manohar Cuntinha, Secretary, Holy Cross Church Committee, Hosabettu, Sr. Laveena, Superior, BSDP Sisters Congregation, Dr Sudheer M, Principal in charge, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru were the guests of honor. There were a total of 52 participants along with staff members. The programme began with invoking god’s blessings. Mr Rajesh K, NSS programme officer welcomed the gathering. Rev Fr Santosh Rodrigues in his speech stressed about the importance of social service and congratulated the students for attending the camp. Rev Fr. Rohith D’costa, in his speech motivated the students to actively participate in the camp. Dr Sudheer M, Principal in charge-SJEC, briefed the students about the role of NSS in nation building and inspired the students to actively involve themselves in social service. Ms Nidhishree proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Nandini compered the programme.
Shramadhan was conducted during the special camp. Volunteers had cleaned the bushes on either side of the main road, near to the school entrance. They also cleaned the premises of the church. As part of the Shramadhan activity, the soil was dug for rain water harvesting and recharge pits were created in the church premises. During the Special camp, yoga sessions were held for half an hour. Flag hoisting ceremony was organized every day in the morning. In the afternoon there were lecture series arranged for the students. Snake Kiran shared his knowledge about snakes and enlightened the students about the importance of snakes. Mr Ronald D’souza, Aquatic Bio systems Mangaluru shared his experience about fisheries. Students also had a visit to few of the famous places in Karkala, namely St Lawrence Church, Attur, Koti Chennaya theme park and Gomateshwara temple Karkala. Students also visited Hosabettu village and interacted with the villagers. At the end of each day, games and cultural programs were conducted by the students. All the participants of the camp came forward to showcase their talents. Valedictory programme was held on 24th January 2019. Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal SJEC appreciated the students for being part of the special camp and suggested to come up with similar programmes in the future. Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director SJEC appreciated the students for attending the camp even though they had holidays. Rev Fr. Santosh Rodrigues, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Hosabettu, Moodbidri appreciated the students for their discipline and dedication during the special camp. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Chief of R&D SJEC was the guest of honor. Mr Ananth Kamath welcomed the gathering. Mr Rajesh K proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Nandini compered the programme.
As part of the Communal Harmony Campaign Week from 19th to 25th November 2018, flag stickers were distributed and voluntary donations were collected through the NSS volunteers of our college. A sum of Rs 4605/- was collected. A cheque of Rs 4605/- with number 092253 dated 10/12/2018 was issued for the same.
NSS SJEC unit & Department of Physical Education had organized a cleanliness drive on 17th November 2018 from 8:00 am till 11:30 am. The formal programme was held outside the college main gate. Apeksha & Ankitha Rai delivered the NSS prayer song. The inaugural program was addressed by Dr.Rio D'Souza, Principal SJEC. In his speech he stressed about the importance of cleanliness. He inspired the students to actively involve in the Swachata Abhiyan. He also appreciated the NSS prayer song. He congratulated the students for taking part in the programme. Loshika compered the programme. More than 60 volunteers representing NSS, YRC & Department of Physical Education participated in the cleanliness drive. The cleaning was done from Mangalajyothi till the Church complex. Bushes and grass near to the college entrance were cut by the volunteers. College had provided one grass cutter with operator and two workers to help the volunteers. Further, a tipper and all the necessary requirements to clean the surroundings were provided by the college. All the volunteers actively participated in the cleanliness drive. Drinking water facility was provided during the activity. All were provided with refreshments. Sneha Bazar sponsored cold drinks to the students.NSS coordinator Mr. Rajesh K and Ms Divya Pai, Ms Vaneesha V Rodrigues, Assistant Physical Education Director and Ms Prajwal D’Souza, Mr Clavian Miranda guided the volunteers.
A talk on healthy diet by Dr Sanjana Shenoy, HOD of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics at Besant Women’s College, Mangaluru was organized by NSS UNIT of SJEC on 22/10/2018 in Spoorthi Hall at 3:00PM in ACADAMIC BLOCK 3.The student coordinator Mr.Chethan welcomed the resource person.Dr Sanjana Shenoy started with the presentation which was lively and interactive. She said that diet and health go hand in hand. She spoke about basic components of healthy lifestyle diet, healthy eating habits, common problems arising out of a flawed diet. She said that the eating habits of most Indians were the one practiced by our forefathers and they were quite healthy unlike today’s generation. Her motto is to “Eat Healthy and Stay Fit”. About 200 students attended this programme. The programme was coordinated by NSS coordinators, Mr Rajesh K and Mrs Divya K.Pai.
As part of Milan 2018 Cultural programme, food and games stalls were arranged by NSS Unit of the college. Around 20 students were actively involved in arranging the stalls.
The activity of Planting of saplings, undertaken by NSS volunteers of St Joseph Engineering College Vamanjoor, was held on 7th September 2018. It was a memorable evening as fun blended with a cause of protecting nature. The venue for planting the saplings was near girls hostel SJEC.
The event started at 4pm with a NSS prayer by Ms Ankitha and Ms Apeksha. Following this was inspiring words about protecting nature by, Dr Rio D’ Souza, Principal SJEC. Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC also appreciated the initiative taken and encouraged to have more activities and camps by NSS. Assistant Director Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa was also present and appreciated the work.
Different kinds of plants like banana and mango were brought in prior. Many pits where dug to plant these saplings with the help of housekeeping staffs. The activity was inaugurated by the management by planting a sapling, adding manure and watering it. After the inauguration, a vote of thanks was given by Nidhishree B of 4th year E&C. After the formal function, the NSS volunteers planted saplings, added manure and watered them. Students enjoyed the activity and understood the importance and happiness they get in planting saplings. The event ended at around 5.00 pm. At the end, refreshment was given for everyone present.
The master of ceremony for the evening was Ankitha Shetty of 4th year E&C. The arrangements needed for the activity was done by the house keeping staff of SJEC. NSS Coordinator Rajesh K, President Chetan Ramesh of 4th year Mechanical and the treasurer Dheeraj Hegde of 4th year Civil took initiatives to coordinate the entire event.
NSS and AICUF conducted drives to collect cash and materials for the victims of floods in Kodagu district and Kerala state on 20th and 21st August 2018.The amounts and materials collected have been disbursed as shown below.
Cash Collected: Rs 1, 05,600/- has been handed over to the Diocese of Mangalore flood relief fund on 25th August 2018.
Cheque: A Cheque of Rs 5000/-has been handed over to the Diocese of Mangalore flood relief fund on 25th August 2018.
Materials collected have been handed over to the D.K District Administration on 22nd August 2018.
The NSS and YRC (Youth Red Cross) wing of SJEC-Mangaluru had organized a fund raising campaign to provide financial assistance to help Mr Abhishek Prasanna, S/O Late Mr Gurudatt and Mrs Jayanthi, aged 15 and pursuing his education at NMPT - Panambur. Abhishek was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia-Blood Cancer). A total sum of Rs 1,38,650 /- has been raised from the College. Rev. Fr Joseph J. Lobo, Director - SJEC handed over the cheque to Mrs Jayanthi on 12th April, 2017. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis – Principal-SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director-SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal-SJEC, and Mr Godfrey E. Pinto, HR Manager – SJEC, along with all the NSS & YRC volunteers were present on the occasion. SJEC prays for the speedy recovery of Abhishek.
On the same day, an amount of Rs 10,000/- was handed over to Mr Shekar from Nitte, as financial support for his physically challenged children, Prajwal and Pratheeksha. The amount was raised as proceedings from the Food and Games Stalls that were installed by NSS and YRC during the SJEC Annual Athletic Meet Go-For-Gold 2017 on 16 February 2017.
