On the occasion of 70th Independence Day of our beloved Country, Josephites gathered in front of the Administrative Block to remember the efforts of our Freedom Fighters, to salute the contributions of our forefathers, to pay homage to the supreme sacrifices of our soldiers, and to pledge and reaffirm our commitment to contribute towards the growth of the Nation.
Dr Nalini Rebello, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at SJEC graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Director Incharge of SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, and Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC were the other dignitaries present for the celebrations. Ms Vaneesha Rodrigues and Mr Sachin Nayak, Physical Education Directors of SJEC organized the celebrations. Students and Faculty from various Departments were present on the occasion.
The patriotic passion in everybody’s hearts was raised a notch higher with the wonderful rendering of ARR’s Maa Tujhe Salaam. This was followed by the hoisting of the National Flag by the Chief Guest. The Security Personnel of SJEC led the gathering in saluting the National Flag and rendering the National Anthem.
In her address, Dr Nalini Rebello paid homage to the sacrifices of all freedom fighters, on whose hardships and account, we enjoy the privileges of being citizens of an Independent India. She also remembered and saluted the Contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhai Patel and other National leaders responsible for the creation of the India we live in. Dr Nalini opined that, while lauding the economic growth of India as reflected in the current GDP of 7.4 which is better than that of China, it is also important to acknowledge the persistent social problems faced by the Country. Be it the caste discrimination, dowry, female infanticide, communal violence etc, it is imperative that we fight off these evils to achieve sustained and inclusive growth. Dr Nalini asked the students and faculty present to think about their personal contribution to the country. She stated that, we all are capable to contribute positively to the growth of the nation. Faculties, by going beyond the syllabus, and students, by being innovative and becoming entrepreneurs can contribute to the declining employment rate of India. A collective effort by all citizens is essential to take this forward. Dr Nalini also spoke about the divisiveness and hatred spread by a small segment of our population and the need to be guarded against such divisiveness and the politics surrounding it. She pointed out the success of 90% of populations’ willingness to stay united against 10% divisive forces are what make us special. Dr Nalini shared her views on three important thoughts, which are, live and let live, misuse of freedom, and the quote from the Former President of America, John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. She wished everybody present a Happy Independence Day.
The address was followed by distribution of sweets. The function was compeered by compèred by Mr Shane, Student from 2nd Year Mechanical Engineering.
