Civil: Industrial Visit to Sewage Treatment Plant, Kavoor, Mangaluru

The Department of Civil Engineering organized a one-day industrial visit to Sewage Treatment Plant, Kavoor, Mangaluru on 8th October 2016 for VII Semester students. Two faculty members Mr Vinod T D’Souza and Mr Prashant Kurdekar accompanied a group of 34 students.

Sewage Treatment Plant is situated at Mullakad, Kavoor in 4 acres area. The capacity of the treatment plant is 43.5 MLD (million litres per day), it consists of 9 pumping stations in the Mangaluru vicinity from where the sewage is pumped to the treatment plant. The total sewage produced by the city is around 22 to 23 MLD. The main objective of the visit was to make students aware of the onsite process and the various waste water treatment processes carried out in the municipal treatment plant. The students group was initially taken to the training room, where the model of the treatment plant was located. Ms Shruthi explained the locations and specifications of different treatment processes in the plant.

The different treatment processes carried out in the treatment plant were screening, grit removal using grit chamber, biological process like UASBR, aeration process, primary sedimentation, sludge thickening, sludge digestion and sludge drying beds. Mr Satish, Plant In-charge, took the students for a plant visit and explained every activity happening in the treatment. He also answered the queries of the students regarding the different treatment processes.

The Industrial visit to Sewage treatment plant was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure of treatment processes, which can help them in their academics and future career enhancement.
