EEE: Solar Technician Programme SURYAMITRA

Following the field visit to Rural Community Lab of SELCO Foundation on 13th January, 2017, a three-day Solar Technician programme SURYAMITRA was conducted on 19th to 21st January 2017. A training programme of this nature was held for the first time for Engineering students and Faculty members in the Rural Community Lab of SELCO Foundation, Manipal.

From the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of SJEC, 21 students and faculty along with HOD Dr Sheryl Colaco, Mr Deepesh Kanchan and Ms Divya Pai participated in this programme from 19th – 21st January 2017. The technical sessions on Solar AC Systems, Solar DC Systems, and Load Calculations were conducted by Mr Suhas Kumar, Engineer (Design). The Practical session included hands-on training on Panel-Module Connections, Metering Devices for Lighting system, Solar Inverters, and Solar thermal Systems were conducted by Mr Praveen, Senior Manager (Sales and Services).

The Sessions on Development of ECO systems for Need Based Analysis and Group Work on Problem Statement identification were conducted by Mr Alric D’Souza, Senior Manager (Society and Community services). On completion of the above listed sessions on above Day 1 and Day 2, Day 3 constituted an On-Site Training Session by SELCO technicians. These Sessions were conducted at a site near Vikas Junior College, Yeyyadi, Mangaluru. The Sessions included physical exercise of actual installation of Battery, PV Panel, Charging Circuit and the LED Lights. This was followed by the installation of Solar Water Heater. The Day ended with Mr Alric delivering a Talk on Marketing Strategies at the Site.

The Theory and Practical Sessions were much appreciated by all the participants. This is the first step taken by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering towards inspiring its students to take up socially relevant Innovative Project Work.
