A 10 Days FDP on Power and Energy Systems was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at SJEC in association with The National Training Centre for Solar Technology, KPCL - Bengaluru from 19th to 28th June 2017. This was one of the biggest events organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering till date and it attracted participants from NITK, MIT, NMAMIT, GSSIETW, SDMIT and NMPT. It had an impressive list of Resource Personnel comprising Dr H. Naganagouda, Director - NTCST, Mr Shyam Sundar, Director - Studer Innotech India Pvt Ltd, Mr H. Jayakumar, Retd Joint Director CPRI, Mr M.K Narayan, GM(Retd), Excide Batteries, Mr Pramod Kumar Naik, Senior Application Engineer, Corel Technologies, Mr K S Pai, MD - Vijaya Solar Plant, Mr Shravanth Vasisht, Research Fellow, IISc Bangalore, Mr K Vasudevan, Senior Manager, ETAP Automations, Mr T K Nagaraj Rao, Senior Manager, Electrical Maintenence, MRPL and Mr Alric D’souza, Senior Manager, SELCO Foundation, Rural Community Lab, Manipal.
The Inaugural function of the FDP was presided over by the Former Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Joseph J Lobo on 19th June 2017 at 9:30 am in Fr Fred Memorial Seminar Hall. The Chief Guest and the Key note Speaker was Mr Sudipta Ghosh, AGM Operations, SELCO India and the Guest of Honour was Dr Naganagouda, Director - NTCST. The inaugural function was also graced by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director - SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal - SJEC, Dr Sheryl Grace Colaco, Professor and Head - EEE and FDP Coordinators Mr Deepesh S K & Mr Rolen Rodrigues.
The inaugural function was followed by technical sessions on An Overview of Energy and Renewable Energy Sources in forenoon and Solar Energy & Wind-Solar Hybrid System in the afternoon by Dr Naganagouda. Day 2 - forenoon had Technical Session on Demonstration of Solar Installation with Data Collection and Design of Rooftop Solar Power Plants Standalone System and Grid Connected with Net Metering by Dr Naganagouda followed by Field Visit to 4MW Solar Power Plant at NMPT, Panambur in the afternoon session. Day - 3 Forenoon had a Technical Session on Fundamentals of Inverter, Types, Design / Sizing of Inverters, Charge Controllers by Mr Shyam Sundar followed by a session on Design of Solar PV grid Connected Power Plants by Dr Naganagouda in the afternoon. Day 4 - Forenoon had a Technical Session on Earthing of Solar Plants and Lighting Systems by Mr H. Jayakumar followed by a session on Batteries and its Applications by Mr M.K Narayan in the afternoon. Day - 5 had hands on sessions with MATLAB 2017a by Mr Pramod Kumar Naik, Senior Application Engineer, Corel Technologies on MATLAB Programming Basics & Model Based Design Using Simulink and Control System Design & Analysis and Simscape Power Systems. Day - 6 had field visit to Vijaya Solar Plant, Katpadi where the participants got information on the manufacturing plant of solar water heaters and rooftop solar power plant from Mr Vinay Kumar, Engineer, Vijaya Solar Plant. Day 7 and 8 were public holidays on account of Sunday and Ramadan. Day - 9 forenoon had a technical session on Projects with rooftop solar panels in Indian railways by Mr Shravanth Vasisht, this was followed by seminar on Recent Power System Simulation Tools and Hands on Session with ETAP and PSCAD by Mr K Vasudevan in the afternoon. Day - 10 had a Technical Session on Innovative Community Based Projects by Mr Alric D’Souza, followed by a seminar on Captive Power Generation in Process Plants by Mr T K Nagaraj Rao.
Day - 10 ended with a valedictory function were the delegates gave their feedback on the FDP. All the participants appreciated the efforts put by the organizing team and the resource personnel of the FDP. The function concluded by the distribution of participation certificates by the Chief Guest Mr T K Nagaraj Rao.
