College Day Celebrations at SJEC

St Joseph Engineering College – Mangaluru celebrated its sixteenth College Day on 23 February 2018. The celebrations commenced at 5:30 pm in the Open Air Stage of the College. The event witnessed the participation of two esteemed personages, from IT giants TCS and Wipro, as Special Guests. Mr B. B. Shetty, Head- Regional HR, Tata Consultancy Services – Bengaluru graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, and Mr Praveen Kamath, General Manager and Head HR, Technology Practice Units, Wipro Ltd. Bengaluru, participated as the Guest of Honour. Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangaluru and President of SJEC, presided over the function. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director – SJEC, welcomed the gathering to the occasion and introduced the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, presented the annual report of the College to the house.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Praveen Kamath highlighted the need for the educational system to step up to the rising challenges and competitions. The Chinese with their increasing proficiency in English is challenging the innate IT edge of India. The Philippines is also emerging as a hub for customer support. Mr Kamath stated that academic rigour is essential and is the first source of truth in a student’s capabilities. He asked students to engage in online certification through platforms such as He pointed out that, while curriculum provides only the fundamentals, recruitment by top companies mandates value additional certified courses that complements the work done in College.  Along with developing technical competencies, Mr Kamath also asked the students work on their speaking skills and language, as it is vital to articulate thoughts to engage in strong negotiations. He also mentioned that, in spite of possessing the desired skills and competencies, students with poor attitude struggle to grow. Mr Kamath asked the students to love the land they belong to, embrace their parents, and remember their teachers and Institution, as they grow in life.

Mr B. B. Shetty in his address provided insights to the students from the perspective of a recruiter. He asked students to be proficient in latest technologies and stay updated. He focused on the need for students to prioritize their work and put in hard work daily. He asked students to pursue their interests with passion. He asked them to plan their career goals right now and identify their career path. Mr Shetty asked students to work on their core competencies and convert that into a career rather than pursuing IT just for the opportunities involved. He asked students to be ethical in all their interactions. He asked them to be aware of the law of the land and adhere to it in their businesses. He also asked students to value personal safety.

The event also witnessed the felicitations of all student achievers in sports and academics. The Guests, along with the President, distributed the various excellence awards. Faculty achievements were also honoured. In his presidential address, His Excellency, the Bishop of Mangaluru thanked the two eminent guests for their presence and words of encouragement and wisdom offered to the students. He advised students to use the facilities provided by the College and build competencies and knowledge to become capable engineers. He warned them against the ill effects of getting addicted to social media and other technologies. The Bishop asked the students to be respectful in their interactions with people, as this will also influence the effectiveness of their communication. He acknowledged the contribution of the Faculty and Management in taking the College in the right direction. The Bishop wished the students well and asked them to be achievers in life.

Dr Babitha Rohit, convener of the event delivered the vote of thanks. Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director – SJEC, and Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, along with Mr Rudolf Charles D’Souza, Convener of the function, were the other dignitaries on the dais. Ms Viola Pinto and Mr Joel D’Mello, Assistant Professors, compered the formal function.

A cultural extravaganza followed the formal ceremony with the students displaying their wonderful musical and dancing skills.
