A vibrant Department, established in 2012, with the first batch of undergraduate students graduating in 2016, the Civil Engineering department aims to produce graduate engineers equipped for careers in the public and private sector encompassing areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources, transportation, environmental and construction industries. The faculty is well trained in all major specializations of Civil Engineering. Spacious and well equipped state-of-the-art laboratories and computing facilities are the mainstay of the Department. Frequent visits by professionals from the construction industry and guest lectures by visiting faculty provide practical experience and keep students abreast with the latest advancements. Apart from the syllabus, extra activities like manual modeling and 3D AutoCAD modeling of structures are also conducted. The Department also offers consultancy services for soil testing and concrete testing to construction sites in and around Mangaluru.

On the 7th of March 2024, third-year Civil Engineering students along with their faculty supervisors, Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar Bhojaraju, Dr. Prakash K G, and Ms. Pranamya K, embarked on a transformative educational jouey to NIRMITHI KENDRA located in Surathkal. The primary objective of this visit was to delve deeply into the realm of cost-effective construction methods and the integration of precast members, aligning theoretical knowledge with practical applications. NIRMITHI KENDRA, renowned for its pioneering efforts in promoting sustainable building practices, provided an enriching platform for exploration and discovery. Throughout the visit, students actively participated in live demonstrations, witnessing firsthand the utilization of alteative construction techniques such as stabilized mud blocks and compressed stabilized earth blocks. Engaging with compelling case studies showcased the real-world applicability and success stories of these innovative methods. Moreover, the intricacies of precast member fabrication and their role in expediting construction processes were thoroughly examined, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize traditional building practices. Interactions with seasoned experts offered invaluable insights into haessing indigenous resources and fostering a culture of innovation to address pressing housing challenges while ensuring environmental sustainability. This immersive experience not only expanded students' knowledge horizons but also ignited a passion for embracing eco-friendly practices and pioneering change within the field of Civil Engineering, thereby equipping them with the tools and inspiration needed to become future leaders in sustainable construction.
A three-day Workshop on "Bacterial Concrete- New Era for Construction Industry' was hosted from 7th to 9th February 2024 for all the staff, students, and research scholars of the civil engineering department of SJEC from 9.00 AM to 5.00 PM at Prerana Hall. The workshop was initiated by a prayer song. The head of the department, Professor Dr. B Yajnheswaran welcomed the resource person Dr. K Krishna Prasad. The floral welcome was done by Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar. Later, by watering the plant, the workshop was inaugurated by the resource persons and conveners. Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar introduced the resource person to the gathering followed by talk of the resource person, Dr. K Krishna Prasad. The schedule of the workshop was announced by Dr. Nishitha D'Souza.
Later, with the completion of the formal function, the first session started with the topic of basic concepts of microbiology. The key takeaway of the moing session was bio cementation which is an ecological process based on the microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) mechanism, which results in the deposition of calcium carbonate. Further, the significance of carbon sequestration, self-healing concrete, and optimum utilization of the resources was discussed. The afteoon session was a hands-on session where we leaed about sterilization, media preparation, and bacteria cultures. The second day of the workshop started with a recap of the first day. After the technical talk, everyone was directed to assemble in the microbiology lab. The previous day cultured bacteria were seen under the microscope and the detailed procedure was explained to the resource person.
On the third day, the session was led by Dr. B Yajnheswaran and Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar. The students responded well to the resource person. Dr. Nishitha and Dr. Prakash along with all the faculty coordinators, and student volunteers coordinated well for the successful completion of the workshop. Finally, the session was concluded with the facilitation of the resource person by the head of the department. The workshop was concluded by Dr. Prakash by delivering a Vote of Thanks.
Students from the Department of Civil Engineering visited Varahi Hydel Power Station and Shyamili Hydel Power Station as a part of industrial visit on 01 February 2024. The visit was intended to make students lea about the basic concepts of Fluid Mechanics and other aspects related to the same. A total of 36 students from the third semester participated in this visit. Dr. Nishitha J D'souza and Mr. Rohith P. Veigas. Assistant professors from the Civil Department Coordinated this visit.
The inauguration of the NIRMAN Civil Engineering Students Association activities for 2024 took place at the Kalam Auditorium on January 6, 2024, with Chief Guest Mr. Ramananda H S, Dean Students Welfare, President of the function Dr. Yajnheswaran B, HOD Civil Department.

The industrial visit to Chennai from October 1st to October 7th, 2023, proved to be a transformative jouey for the final students of Civil Engineering from St. Joseph Engineering College. The students embarked on a comprehensive exploration of various aspects of civil engineering, blending theoretical knowledge with practical exposure. The visit commenced with a captivating tour of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), where students immersed themselves in cutting-edge research and innovation, gaining insights into advanced methodologies and technologies. This was followed by a visit to the Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai, where students delved into the intricacies of structural engineering, engaging with leading researchers and scholars to deepen their understanding of seismic engineering and reinforced concrete structures. Cultural excursions to Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry provided students with a unique opportunity to explore India's rich architectural heritage and multicultural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interplay between tradition and innovation in civil engineering. The visit culminated with a reflective session in Auroville, where students synthesized their experiences and insights, recognizing the transformative impact of the jouey on their academic and personal growth. Guided by passionate mentors and accompanied by dedicated faculty members, the students retued to St. Joseph Engineering College with a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm, equipped with practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and a holistic understanding of civil engineering that will serve as a solid foundation for their future endeavours. Three days workshop on concrete mix design using IS 10262-2019 (Theory and Practice) organized by Department of Civil Engineering in association with ICI-Mangalore chapter, ACCE-Bangalore and Mangalore Center, ISTE-Student Chapter, Nirman-Student Association and Research facility group SJEC inaugurated with great enthusiasm at St Joseph Engineering college Mangalore. The event was sponsored by Infra Market and co sponsored by Dr Fixit and Sri Durga Electricals. The inaugural ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by a series of esteemed introductions and addresses.
The chief guest of the event, Er. Concroc Nagesh Puttaswamy, a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in the field. Dr. Yajneshwaran B, Head of the Department (HOD) welcomed all the dignitaries and participants to the program . The inaugural function was graced by the presence of Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D'souza, Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D'souza,the Principal of SJEC and guest of honors, Er. Ujwal D'souza , Dr. K E Prakash.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Rio D'Souza highlighted the significance of such workshops in the current construction industry scenario, emphasizing the fusion of civil engineering with technology to stay aligned with contemporary trends.

Puttaswamy traced the remarkable evolution of concrete technology since 1947, underlining its exponential growth. He highlighted India's ability to recycle concrete ingredients, exemplifying the industry's progress. He also called for a closer collaboration between academia and industry through expert sessions.

Ujwal D'souza, guest of honor, chairman of ACCE Mangalore expressed optimism about the workshop's potential to enhance understanding of industrial concepts and emphasized the historical evolution of concrete mix design. The first technical session of Er Nagesh Puttaswamy emphasized on historical evolution of construction from Egyptian Pyramid to the birth of Portland cement. Sir also explained the evolution of concrete as a friendly material for the construction industry. Session also put a light on art of making a concrete by understanding concrete composition ie., Binder and filler materials.

Session moved from binder material to desirable properties of filler material to achieve high strength concrete such as moisture condition of the aggregate and importance of shape of coarse aggregate.
Session also covered the evolution of fine aggregate and its adoption in IS 383-2016.Sir also highlighted the 3 important phases of concrete and explained in detail the variation in the chemical composition in different phases of concrete.
Post lunch session concentrated more into achieving economical concrete right mix proportion of compositions to achieve good workability with a required time window, with desired strength, toughness and durability.
Sir discussed in detail the different desirable properties of concrete such as compressive and flexural strength, green properties of concrete such as slump, slump retention and flow, durability of concrete against chemical attack, rain and sun, freeze and thaw.
Participants also understood the logical explanation of achieving economical concrete by understanding cost of materials, machinery, manpower, transport, and logistics with cost of compaction and finishing without compromising any codal requirements.
In the session sir also described different parameters influencing cement mix proportions, maintaining minimum and maximum cement content without compromising on strength requirements.
During Session 4 of the Concrete Mix Design Workshop on Day 2 , Er. Nagesh Puttaswamy began with an insightful introduction, sharing his extensive experience with the attendees. He then delved into concrete specifications, discussing the roles of specific consultants and site teams. Notably, Er. Nagesh emphasized the crucial role of target strength in the concrete mix design process, underlining its significance for achieving desired outcomes. Participants gained valuable insights into both practical experiences and technical aspects of concrete mix design.
Session 5 of the workshop involved a dynamic hands-on activity, where participants were organized into teams of 10 members each. Each team was assigned with unique real time challenges that required them to design appropriate concrete grades and determine exposure conditions. The participants exhibited great enthusiasm as they tackled these challenges head- on, working collaboratively to find solutions. This interactive session provided valuable practical experience and encouraged active problem-solving among the participants. In the session sir explained concrete mix design with aid of test data.
In the afteoon session we had effective hands on session in concrete lab of SJEC with the help of student volunteers. We had very informative and interactive session, all the participants benefited from this session, where session was conducted in hybrid mode with the help of zoom platform, and hence many of the interested people from various parts got benefited from this.
On third day of the workshop, i.e 13th of August participants has visited RMC plant of Infra Market in BC road. This industrial visit is planned to provide practical insight to the participants about the mechanism of concrete preparation and transportation in a RMC plant in day to day construction activities.
The workshop ended with a valedictory function presided by Dr Ramananda H S, Registrar of SJEC. Dr. Yajneshwaran B, Head of the Department (HOD) welcomed all the dignitaries and participants to the valedictory function. Chief guest of the function Er Nagesh Puttaswamy shared his experience as resource for the workshop and thanked SJEC for providing the opportunity to be part of the successful workshop. Dr Ramananda H S in his presidential address congratulated the department and participants for successful completion of the workshop. Chief guest Er Nagesh Puttswamy was felicitated by Dr Ramananda HS. Ms Pranamya K, convener of the workshop read a brief report of the workshop for the gathering. Mr Bhojaraj M co-convener of the workshop, concluded the ceremony with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all contributors and attendees.
In conclusion, the three days workshop conducted by Er. Nagesh Puttaswamy proved to be an enriching experience, offering participants a comprehensive insight into the subject matter and leaving them equipped with valuable knowledge to apply in the Civil Engineering field.
The Department of Civil Engineering organized the inauguration of the student club, SHILPA and followed by the "Meet The Author" event in collaboration with the Library and Leaing group as a part of the Lecture Series on Civil Engineering 2023 on 15th June 2023 from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm in the Kalam Auditorium at SJEC, Vamanjoor. Professor S.S. Bhavikatti, an outstanding author and former HOD of NITK inaugurated SHILPA, a student club, and subsequently graced the event "Meet The Author" as the esteemed Chief Guest. He delivered an enlightening talk on the subject of textbooks and textbook writing. The presence of Professor S.S. Bhavikatti was a true blessing for both students and faculty members. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field of engineering, the college honored him on this special occasion. The event was organized by Dr. Yajneshwaran B, HOD-Civil, Dr. Sreya M V and Ms. Vishikha Keshava, Convenors, Dept. of Civil Engineering. SHILPA serves as a platform for students to exhibit their talents and proficiency in model-making within the laboratory, enabling them to create more realistic models beyond the confines of the lab. Prof. S S Bhavikatti expressed admiration for the various models showcased in the museum, including the Christ the Redeemer model, the Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, the city of Petra model, the Pyramid of Giza model, as well as the models of residential and rotating buildings created by civil engineering students. Around 200 students and many faculties from various streams of engineering attended the talk by the Chief guest followed by the SHILPA inauguration. The interaction between the Chief Guest and the attendees proved to be highly captivating, as he shared his personal experiences and insights on the art of crafting textbooks. The session was incredibly fruitful and provided students and staff of SJEC with a memorable and valuable experience. Professor Bhavikatti's suggestions and words of wisdom to the students and faculty members were truly remarkable. Later on, he visited the laboratories and research facilities within the Civil Engineering Department, where he expressed his admiration for the ongoing research endeavors in our department. Additionally, he made a special visit to the library at SJEC and left his signature on his own textbooks, creating an awe-inspiring moment for all those present. Those moments were truly remarkable and filled with great admiration.
One day hands on training session on "PCB Design and Fabrication using KiCad Software” was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering & Department of Civil Engineering in association with SJEC AICTE Idea Lab & IEEE SJEC student Chapter- PES for the III year students of EEE and Civil Engineering Department on 5 June 8, 2023. The final year studentsMr Rajath Kumar & Mr ManojKulal from the dept. of EEE were the resource persons. The motive of training was to enhance knowledge of students on PCB design skills. A brief introduction was given on a schematic capture tool to create PCB layout, understanding the electrical parameters and creating the schematic. The resource team also explained to define design rules and requirements,placing of the components, route the traces and generating design/layout files. Participants were given hands on exercise to create the schematic of op-amp tester circuit, PCB etching, drilling and soldering. The outcome of the training has enabled the students to gain an in-depth practical knowledge on using KiCad software for building mini projects andmain project. The training session provided a great opportunity for interested students inelectronic projects to lea new skills. The program was coordinated by Ms MadhaviGatty and Mr Rohith Veigas - Assistant Professors from Dept. of EEE and Civil Engineering.
Day 1 and 2
3-Dimensional Analysis of Structures using ETABS
This workshop is mainly designed for final-year students as they must be equipped with Industry oriented software for the analysis and design of 3 dimensional structures.
On the first day, i.e. on 29 th May 2023, the first session HOD inaugurated the session by initiating the software and briefed about the importance of leaing new software applications and up gradation of skill to every civil engineer.
Later Ms Pranamya K started the session by teaching basic commands of modelling in ETABS software. Then she also taught to define materials, and different types of sections and assign the same to the model. In the afteoon session concentrated mainly on different types of codes to be referred for different types of loads and their application in ETABS.
In the second day session, modelling of real-time project was given to students as an assignment and assistance were given to resolve real-time issues in modeling real-time projects. Students could be able to do 3d models for the real-time project and apply the loads as per Indian standard codes. After analysis students also leat about load combinations and designing of members in ETABS

Advance Science and Technology in Microbiology Lab.
1. Students were taught to use the Compound Microscope.
2. They were taught to prepare the Agarose Gel Mixture used as a growth medium for the microbes
3. They were taught to sanitize themselves and use a Vertical Laminar Airflow chamber.
4. Sanitizing and preparing the petri dishes and other material required for the microbiological experiments.
5. Various methods of streaks and their usage in the growth of microbes.

Reinforced Concrete Corrosion Testing
The corrosion workshop on May 31, 2023, is designed to provide final year civil engineering students with the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with corrosion-related issues in structures. Corrosion is a significant conce in the construction industry as it can weaken the integrity of structures over time. Therefore, it is essential for aspiring civil engineers to be equipped with the knowledge of corrosion prevention and mitigation techniques.

On 6th April 2023, an industrial visit was conducted to the Varahi underground power house, situated in Hosangadi, Udupi. The visit was organized for second-year engineering students by two faculty members, Mr. Rohith Prakash Veigas and Ms. Vishikha Keshava. The Varahi underground power house is one of the most impressive hydroelectric power stations in India, generating a total power capacity of 240 MW. The power house is located inside a mountain, and its unique design and architecture have made it a popular destination for industrial visits. The visit began with a brief introduction by the power house officials about the history, construction, and functioning of the power station. The officials then took the students and faculty members on a guided tour of the entire power house. The tour covered various sections of the power house, including the underground powerhouse, transformer hall, control room, and switchyard. The students were able to witness the entire process of power generation, from the water intake to the generation of electricity. They also leaed about the various types of turbines used in the power house, and how they are operated and maintained. The officials explained the safety measures that are taken to ensure the safety of the workers and the power station. The visit provided an excellent opportunity for the students to lea about the practical aspects of their field of study. They were able to observe the operation of various equipment, and also interacted with the officials to clarify their doubts and queries. Overall, the industrial visit to the Varahi underground power house was a great success. The students gained valuable insights into the working of a hydroelectric power station, which will be useful for their future studies and career. The visit was informative, educational, and inspiring, and we are grateful to the power house officials for their hospitality and cooperation.
The Department of Civil Engineering has taken a step forward for the "Lecture Series on Civil Engineering 2023” in association with Research and Development Group. The lectures aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the students and faculties on topics of emerging areas and topics of current interest in Civil Engineering, such as Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Forensic Civil Engineering, the Application of Artificial Intelligence & Machine Leaing tools in Civil Engineering, and so on. The special lectures will be delivered by leading experts in the field from India and Abroad. As a beginning of this lecture series, the first technical talk on 'Introduction to earthquake Engineering' was organized for all the students and faculties of SJEC on 23rd February 2023 at 02.00 pm in Prerana Hall, Ground floor, AB III Block. The talk was delivered by Dr. Shreyasvi Chandrasekhar, Seismic Hazard Scientist, Global Earthquake Model, Pavia, Italy.
In the present scenario, unplanned development in
the mode world increases the potential impact of an earthquake. Proper
development and evacuation preparedness are crucial for reducing the impact of
an earthquake. By quoting the importance of the above issues, the talk covered
topics including, recent major worldwide earthquake details, earthquakes and
impacts, and emergency evacuation preparedness for seismic hazards. The technical talk was organized by Dr.
Yajneshwaran B, HOD-CE, and Dr. Sreya M V, Coordinator of Lecture series, Dept.
of Civil Engineering. Around 70 students and many faculties attended the
talk from various streams of engineering. This program provided a forum for
students and faculties to interact with the speaker regarding the latest
developments and experiences in mitigating the effects of earthquake-related
hazards. It was an informative
session and a new step taken by the department for the betterment of the
students.
The Department of Civil Engineering conducts a 'Lecture Series on Civil Engineering 2023' in association with Research and Development Group. As a part of this lecture series, the second technical talk on 'The Scope of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) in the Field of Civil Engineering and the Introduction to IOSH Qualification & NEBOSH Training' was organized for all the students and faculties of SJEC on 8th March 2023 at 11.00 am in Bishop Aloysius Paul Hall, Civil Block. The talk was delivered by Mr. Alwyn Mendonca, HSE Consultant & Trainer, Heritage Safety Training Center, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Health, safety, and the environment are considered the top and most important priorities due to safeguarding human lives and properties and especially in high- risk industry sectors. Construction projects have been associated with a high risk of injury and fatal accidents from ancient times. However, even though both worker rights and conditions as well as technology have developed, accidents still happen on construction sites. The only way to secure a safe workplace is through complying with different regulations of HSE standards, Mr. Alwyn Mendonca added. The technical talk was organized by Dr. Yajneshwaran B, HOD-CE, and Dr. Sreya M V, Coordinator of Lecture Series, Dept. of Civil Engineering. Around 110 students and many faculties attended talks from various streams of engineering. This program provided a forum for students and faculties to interact with the speaker about his experiences and regarding the latest developments in Health, safety, and Environment standards in the field of Civil engineering. for the final year Civil Engineering students by Er Anil Hegde and Dr
Palakshappa on 28 september 2022 from 10.00AM to 12:00PM.
The talk began with Mr Ajeeth B, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department welcoming the gathering. Dr Palakshappa interacted with the students about global warming and climate change effect on the earth and preventive measures for the sustainable development and Er Anil Hegde spoke about the importance of safety in structural engineering .Overall the session was very informative and the session ended with a brief Q&A. Mr Sachin U Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department coordinated the program.

association with ISTE, IGBC, ACCE (I), IEI hosted the first of its kind
Inteational Conference on Novel Sustainable Concepts and Technologies in Civil
Engineering (NSCTCE - 22) from 23-25 September 2022.
This
conference aimed at presenting the latest advances in engineering, particularly
in the field of civil engineering, among researchers, scientists, engineers,
and practitioners. This conference also included
presentations of technical papers, discussions, and keynote lectures by experts
in the field of civil engineering.
The Department
of Civil Engineering has been actively involved in planning and organizing this
event. Organizing an event of such a huge magnitude also requires financial
resources which were supported by few Esteemed Sponsorers. The main sponsorers of the

Magna TMT bars, and Co Sponsorer were Sri
Mangala Enterprises, Acebond, KTC, Muliya Jewellers (Puttur) , IRC, Projectile, Mangaluru.
A
total of 12 renowned academicians and Industrialists across the world accepted
our invitation to be the keynote speaker and presented their expertise and
knowledge in the field of civil engineering.
The
conference received 94 abstracts from India, Canada, Iran, and
other parts of the world. These abstracts were thoroughly reviewed by
inteal and exteal reviewers. About 48 abstracts
were shortlisted to submit full-length papers and for the final presentation.
The full-length paper was reviewed by the empaneled experts from academia and
the comments were sent to the participants to incorporate the corrections.
The conference was held for three days
from 23-25 September 2022 in a Hybrid mode (Both Offline and Online). The
Inteational Conference was inaugurated on the first day by the chief guest,
Prof KVL Subramanyam, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, IIT Hyderabad,
presided by Rev Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza. Prof Lakshman Nandagiri, Professor,
Dept. of Water resource and Ocean Engg, NIT, Surathkal and Er Vijay Vishnu
Mayya, Technical Head, ACCE (I), and Dr. Rio Dsouza were the guest of Honour.
The chief guest appreciated the efforts of SJEC and the Department of Civil Engineering
in organizing such an event that is intended at contributing to enhancing
recent technical knowledge among the researchers and students. At the
inauguration, a souvenir of NSCTCE - 22 was
released.
Followed by the Inauguration of the
conference on Day 1, the first keynote session was started on concrete
innovation for sustainable construction by Prof KVL. In his session, he
explained the recent technologies incorporated into concrete innovations. He
also explained several advances in materials, processing technologies, and
production methodologies of 3D printing concrete.
Followed by the keynote session, the First
technical session started. The session was chaired by Mr. Vinod T D'Souza,
Associate Prof AJIET, Mangaluru, and Ms.Vishika Keshava. A total of 3 articles
were presented by the participants.
In the afteoon sessions, 2 keynote
sessions were organized. Prof. Ramancharla Pradeep Kumar presented on the topic
Earthquake Safety of Buildings in India-Some Salient Code Provision and Er
Devadutta bose presented on the topic "Port development in India - An
overview”. In the afteoon session, we organized one technical session, and
the session was chaired by Dr. Anand V R and Mr. Chitharajan M. A total of 4
articles were presented by the participants.
On the second day, a total of 4 keynote
session was organized.
At First Prof G R Dodagoudar, Professor, IIT
Madras presented a keynote session on the topic Sustainability in Piled-Raft
Foundations: Opportunities and Implications for Practice. Prof. Srinivasamurthy
Sharath presented a session on Emerging Technologies in Ocean Renewable Energy
- Towards Carbon-Free Society. Followed by a session on Coastal Environment -
Problems and Perspectives by Prof. Santhosh Thampi. At last, Er. Arun Prabha
General Manager, technical and Incharge, Mangaluru smart city Ltd presented a
session on Mangaluru - A Green Smart City. Out of 4 Technical sessions, across
the sessions 15 participants presented their research work. The sessions were
chaired by Dr. Palakshappa, Dr. Sandeep Nayak, Dr. ESTR Chandrasekhar B, Ms.
Pranamya, Ms. Sreya, and Ms. Reena.
On the third day, a total of 3 keynote
session was organized.
At First, Dr. BB Das presented a keynote
session on Sustainable Nano Composites. Followed by a session on Sustainable
Strategies for Monument Protection by Prof. K Ganesh Babu. The final keynote session was presented by
our chief guest, Prof. D Nagesh Kumar on Remote Sensing, GIS, and DEM for Water
Resources Assessment Mangaluru - A Green Smart City.
We had 4 Technical sessions, and across
the sessions, 17 participants presented their work. The sessions were chaired
by Dr. Bharathi Ganesh, Dr. Yajnheswaran B, Dr. Katta Venakataramana, Dr.
Palakshappa, Mr. Prashant Kurdekar, and Ms. Reena Rodrigues.
Overall, out of 48 participants, 40
participants presented their research work at The First Inteational Conference
NSCTCE - 22. Each keynote session enriched the knowledge of the research
scholars, students, and the civil engineering faculty frateity.
The Department of Civil Engineering in association with
SJEC Industry and Innovation conducted a online webinar on 'Mode Martials in
Construction' for the II and III year Civil Engineering students by 'ConCroc'.

The talk began with Ms. Reena James Rodrigues,
Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department welcoming the gathering. Mr
Nagesh Puttaswamy interacted with the students about
Mode materials that are used in the Civil
Engineering field, such as 3D Graphene, 3D printing materials, construction and
demolition waste, carbon fiber, new types of cement, steel, plastics etc., he
suggested to know more about these materials and how by using such materials
people can acutally obtain a better sustainable solution in construction field.
He guided the students about the preparation required for procuring these
materials by suggesting them to refer some websites. 'Smart construction is no
longer just a buzz but a reality and Sustainable is a permanent prefix' he
said. He also said the importance of sustainable construction where
sustainability is a property of any system to remain diverse and productive
indefinitely.
He also stressed about the pyramid of construction process and the hierarchy which has be followed when doing any construction. He said how the market of property and real estate have changed drastically as more and more young people come asking for property values and enquire about building a home and the average age of their clients has reduced by 15 to 20 years and are well exposed to the world. Overall the session was very informative and the session ended with a brief Q&A

The Department of Civil Engineering in association
with NIRMAN organized an industrial visit to Master Plannery Puttur for third
year Civil Engineering students as part of their curriculum. Total 50 students
participated in the industrial visit on 01-06-2022 accompanied by faculty
members Mr Govinda Krishna M, Mr Sachin U and Ms Reena James Rodrigues. The
students could see the casting of different precast elements manufactured by
the company. Manufacturing of paver blocks and ferrocement structures was
covered during their visit to Master Plannery Rural Development Centre Alike
Majilu. The students could connect their curriculum with the industry. This
visit enhanced the knowledge of the students and helped them gain practical
exposure in the field of precast elements.

students of final year Civil Engineering visited two of the premier educational
and research institutes of the country in Chennai namely Indian Institute of
Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research-Structural Engineering Research Center (CSIR-SERC), Chennai. The
industrial visit was organized from 22 April to 25 April, 2022. Three faculty
members, Ms Reena James Rodrigues, Ms Pranamya K and Mr Bhojaraja M accompanied
the students. They visited IIT Madras on the first day, Friday, 22 April. The
students could visit different labs namely Geotechnical Engineering laboratory,
Structural Engineering laboratory, Transportation Engineering laboratory and
Structural Glass and Research Facility. During the second part of their visit
to IIT Madras, they visited India's first 3D printed house in the campus and
IITM research park. On the second day,
Saturday, 23 April, they visited the historical town of Mahabalipuram. They
also visited the Tiger Headed Rock Cut Temple, Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and
the Light House. On the third day, Sunday, 24 April, they had been to Auroville
and visited the Matrimandir. On the last day, Monday, 25 April, they visited
CSIR-SERC. After securing entry to research center they moved to the academic
section where Mr Ashok Kumar gave us brief explanation about the history,
goals, past achievements and ongoing activities of the institute. Then we were
sent to different laboratories in the campus namely Advanced concrete testing
and evaluation laboratory (ACTEL), Advanced material laboratory (AMT), Advanced
Seismic Testing and Research Lab (ASTAR) and Wind Engineering Laboratory (WEL).
Two days hands on workshop on "Advanced
survey using total station" was organized by the Department of
Civil Engineering in association with Nirman, for the faculty of SJEC from 05th to
06th APRIL 2022. The inaugural program of the workshop was
organized on 05th april 2022 at 12.00 pm in Civil Engineering department.
The resource person for the workshop was Mr S S Pasha, Managing Director, AS
Technologies, Hyderabad.
The workshop was coordinated by Mr
Govinda Krishna M and Mr Sachin U, Assistant Professors, Department of Civil
Engineering. The workshop aimed at developing skills and providing hands on
experience to expertise in Total Station operation. The workshop provided a
deep insight on the Total Station operation and its applications and was highly
appreciated by faculty members.
Total 14 faculty members and two lab
assistants had registered for the workshop and successfully completed the
training.
To create awareness among our
students with respect to the study strategies to crack GATE examination,
various opportunities after civil engineering and to brief about Build India Scholarship-LNT,
the Department of Civil Engineering in association with SJEC Alumni Cell had
organized a talk on the topic "The Next Step after Civil Engineering" for
the 5thand 7th semester Civil Engineering students of
SJEC on 22nd March from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm at
Prerana Hall. This event was organised by Ms Vishikha Keshava, the civil
engineering department's Alumina coordinator.
The resource person was our proud
alumnus Mr. Sheik Mohammad Zunain,
who secured 4th rank in VTU Examination 2020-2021.
Mr. Zunain spoke about strategies to
prepare for higher studies and also gave insights about important software's
that are required to be a sustainable engineer.
He interacted with the students throughout the session and motivated
them with his real life experience. His presentation enlightened civil
engineering students. Mr. Aditya, a final year student, inquired about the
relevant software that might be employed in furthering his civil engineering
career. Mr. Zunain was extremely knowledgeable and provided thoughtful
responses to all of our questions.
As a symbol of affection and
gratitude, Dr. Yagneswaran B, HOD of Civil Engineering Department, presented
Mr. Sheik Mohammad Zunain with the memento. With his words, he also inspired
the students.

for the final year students. The workshop aimed at developing soft skills and providing
hands on experience to expertise in building estimation. The workshop provided
a deep insight on the Autodesk Quantity Takeoff software and its applications
and was highly appreciated by students and faculty members. Total 28 students
had registered for the workshop and successfully completed the training.
The Department of Civil Engineering in association with ISTE student chapter and NIRMAN organized an industrial visit to water treatment plant at Thumbe and sewage treatment plant at Kavoor for third year Civil Engineering students as part of their curriculum. Total 40 students participated in the industrial visit on 27-11-2021 accompanied by faculty members Mr Prashanth Kurdekar, Mr Bhojaraja M and Ms Reena James Rodrigues. The visit was aimed to give insights about the water treatment units in Mangaluru region as well as the sewage treatment plant. The students could connect their curriculum with the industry. A Technical Talk on "Opportunities through GATE exam"
was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with
NIRMAN, for the second, third and final year students of Civil Engineering on
18th November 2021 at 12.00 pm in Bishop Aloysius Paul Hall,
Third floor, Civil Block. The talk was delivered by Dr Ananth Pai S, APEX
Mangaluru. The technical talk was organized by Dr Yajneshwaran B, HOD-CE, Mr
Sachin U NIRMAN coordinator and Ms Reena James Rodrigues, technical talk
coordinator, Department of Civil Engineering. The technical talk aimed at
enhancing the knowledge of the students regarding GATE exam. It highlighted the
different avenues and areas of civil engineering, which can be explored by the
students after graduation. This talk served the purpose of career development
in field of Civil Engineering providing a deep insight on the job and higher
studies aspects also their availability.

The
Department of Civil Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru organized
an Industrial visit to Asphalt Hot Mix Plant, Punjalkatte and Mugrody Asphalt
Drum Mix Plant and Concrete Weigh batch for B.E Civil engineering students of 7th
Sem as part of their curriculum on 30th October 2021 to study
different aspects of hot mix plant, accompanied by three faculty members Ms.
Vishikha Keshava, Mr. Prashanth Kurdekar and Ms. Reena James

The
visit aimed at enhancing the knowledge and visualization of pavement
construction materials and various tests conducted on them.
The
plant is operational for 24 hrs. to meet the construction activities which
includes construction of roads, civil works etc. at different places in and
around Mangalore and neighboring districts and corporations which are
accomplished successfully.
On Monday, 5th April 2021 the Inauguration of Microbiology Research Laboratory was organized by Civil Engineering Department SJEC Mangaluru at 9:15 a.m. the guests arrived and they were escorted by Dr Yajneshwaran B, Head of Department and Dr Bhaskar S, Convenor of the program and Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department. The inauguration of the Microbiology Lab was carried out along with Principal Dr Rio D'Souza, Director Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash, Assistant Directors Fr Rohit D'Costa and Rev Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza. The chief guests of the program Prof Sreenivasa Y M and Prof Babu Narayan K dynamically participated in the event and also added life to the program with their sharing their thoughts. After the inauguration of the Microbiology research Laboratory formal function was conducted at Prerana hall, SJEC Mangaluru, Students of third and final year, Civil Engineering Department was present during the event. Video of Microbiology Lab was displayed. HOD of Civil Engineering Department Dr Yajneshwaran B welcomed the dignitaries to the program. Dr Bhaskar the Associate Professor introduced the guest and also displayed Bioluminescent microbes to the gathering. Students who had worked in the microbiology lab were also honoured by the dignitaries. Chief Guest addressed the gathering by the immense knowledge of microbiology and enlightened the young minds. Prof Babu Narayan K S spoke about Microbes impending in the Civil Engineering field and also gave insights on interdisciplinary works at the micro-organism level that can account for various branches of Civil Engineering. Prof Sreenivas appreciated the initiative taken by the Civil Engineering department in the field of Microbiology. He was mesmerized by the efforts made by the entire team especially Dr Bhaskar S in making the vision into reality. The principal and Director of SJEC Mangalore also appreciated the work and wished all the success for the microbiology research. Dr Bhaskar proposed a vote thanks for the gathering. and he rendered the special thanks to the Master of Ceremony Ms Reena James Rodrigues, Assistant Professor Civil Engineering Department. Refreshments were served at the end of the program. Technical talk at (11:20am. - 12:20pm.) After the completion of the formal program, Prof Sreenivas Y M shared his immense knowledge with the gathering. He spoke about applications of microbes in various branches of Civil Engineering. In this session, the resource person focused on how microorganisms can heal the concrete cracks, how environmental pollution can be controlled by microorganisms, cloud seeding with microbes, bioluminescent effect etc. Technical talk at (12:20 p.m. - 1:20 pm)
The winners of the National Level Virtual event GreenTech Hackathon 2020 hosted by St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) were felicitated in an Awards Ceremony held at the college. Shri Shashi Kumar N, Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
In an attempt to deliver technical and sustainable solutions to the existing local as well as community problems SJEC had organized this Hackathon to provide a platform for students to come together in creating and implementing novel ideas for a sustainable future. The event that was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering at SJEC, in joint association with the SJEC-ISTE Student Chapter, attracted participation from colleges across India and the prizes were given away during the Awards Ceremony.
Dr Yajnheswaran B, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering following which Dr ESTR Chandra Sekhar introduced the Chief Guest.
In his address, Dr Rio D'Souza, Principal of SJEC, spoke about the involvement of the college in solving issues faced by the community. He quoted the Pachanady waste disposal problem and said that realising the need to work with the community, the college has started working on the Care Pachanady movement by collaborating with NGOs and other institutions. He mentioned that the Hackathon was a platform to come up with the solutions to local problems and went onto say that the Mangaluru City Corporation has assured its support to implement the solutions emanating out of the Hackathon.
Ms Mayuri R presented the report of the Hackathon. Mr Alok Pinto, Director of Amarante Shipping Pvt Ltd and Mr Neelapu Srinivasa Reddy, Deputy Manager at JSW, who were the exteal judges of the Hackathon, virtually addressed the gathering.
The first place in the Hardware Edition of the Hackathon was bagged by the team from St Joseph Engineering College and the second prize was secured by the team from Cambridge Institute of Technology, Bengaluru.
The first place in the Software Edition was bagged by the team from Sri Sairam College of Engineering, Bengaluru and the second prize was secured by the team from St Joseph Engineering College.
The first place in the Open Track was bagged by the team from Akhil Bharatiya Maratha Shikshan Parishad's Anantrao Pawar College of Engineering & Research, Pune and the second prize was secured by the team from LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Trivandrum.
After the presentation ceremony, Shri Shashi Kumar addressed the gathering and congratulated the college for coming up with such an innovative event during the pandemic. He said that the event gaering participation from across the nation is an indication of the credibility of the college. He mentioned that the planet requires sustainment and GreenTech Hackathon has been instrumental in developing sustainable solutions. He remarked that sustainment is very important to a city like Mangaluru and the solutions developed by the participants are sure to help the local community.
In his presidential address, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, Director of SJEC, said that the college is committed to providing technical and sustainable solutions to the existing local as well as community problems. He mentioned that the GreenTech and AgriTech teams in the college have been striving hard to make SJEC a clean and green campus. He expressed his happiness at the college adopting 5 villages in its neighbourhood and providing them with technological solutions. He congratulated the entire organizing team for bringing out GreenTech Hackathon 2020.

The Centre for Testing and Consultancy Services has been inaugurated on Friday 5th February 2021 under the Department of Civil Engineering by the Chief Guest Dr Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, Chairman, NMPT, Mangaluru. The programme began with the invocation of almighty and welcoming everyone. Dr Yajnheswaran B, Head of Civil Engineering department welcomed and introduced the Chief guest to the audience. The prestigious part of the programme was inaugurating the consultancy office and unboxing the brochure was done by the chief guest Dr Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, accompanying by Director, Assistant Director, Principal, HOD, Convener. The keynote address was given by the chief guest. He told how engineers are important to the world. What's their role and service to society. Through this Consultancy Centre how it is useful to students. Director, Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza honoured the chief guest with a beautiful memento. Presidential address was given by the Director, Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza. The programme concluded by vote thanks by the Convener Ms Vani D. HOD's, Faculty, non-teaching staff, students of different departments witnessed for this inauguration. The programme was moderated by Ms Reena James Rodrigues.
Two
days hands on workshop on "Revit
Architecture Software" was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering
in association with ISTE-SJEC Chapter, for the final year students of Civil
Engineering from 08th to 09th January 2021. The inaugural
program of the workshop was organized on 08th Jan 2021 at 10.00 am
in Bishop Aloysius Paul Hall, Fourth floor, Academic Block IV. The resource
person for the workshop was Mr Jackson Jebadurai P, Proprietor, CADD TechLABS
Mangaluru. The workshop was a beyond syllabus activity for the final year
students and was organized by Dr Yajnheswaran B, HOD-CE and Mr Prashant
Kurdekar, Chairperson ISTE, Faculty coordinator IGBC, Assistant Professor,
Department of Civil Engineering. The workshop aimed at developing soft skills
and providing hands on experience to expertise in planning and 3D modelling.
The workshop provided a deep insight on the Revit architecture software and its
applications and was highly appreciated by students and faculty members. Total
30 students had registered for the workshop and successfully completed the
training.
The
Department of Civil Engineering organized an industrial visit to the
construction site of proposed PSC Bridge at Gurupura for final year civil
engineering students as part of their curriculum. Total 51 final year students
were participated in industrial visit, accompanied by three faculty members Ms
Vani D, Mr Sachin U and Ms Pranamya K.
The
visit was aimed at enhancing the knowledge & visualization of process-involved
pre stressing of concrete structures. The site engineer Mr Deekshith explained
in detail to the students about the total over view of the project. He
explained in detail various structural elements of the proposed bridge starting
from the foundation to the deck slab. Students got an opportunity to witness
the post tensioning of 25m span prestressed concrete girder and could relate
well with theoretical classroom study with the practical application. Students
were very interactive with the site engineers and posed numerous questions for
better understanding of different elements and process involved in prestressed
concrete structures.
A seminar on “Plastic
Usage and Plastic Waste Management” was organized at St Raymond’s Primary
School, Vamanjoor on 19th February 2020 by the Department of Civil Engineering,
SJEC, Mangaluru in association with Kaataka State Plastic Association (KSPA),
Bengaluru and Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE)-SJEC Student
Chapter, under the leadership of Mr. Prashant Kurdekar, Assistant Professor,
Department of Civil Engineering, SJEC. A team of final year Civil Engineering
students consisting Manisha Kottary, Athira Vijaykumar, Pooja L, Jahnavi U
Mulki, Jithesh Kumar B, John Elton D’Souza, Ignatius Jose, Rwithikh B, Swasthi
Adappa, Vaishak, Zayyan Mohammed and Rohan Pais presented the presentation to
the school students. The seminar aimed at providing knowledge about the plastic
and spread awareness on plastic pollution, plastic management, prevention and
control of plastic pollution among the young minds. The students appreciated
the presentation and actively interacted to gain more information on plastic.
Indian
Society for Technical Education (ISTE) – SJEC Chapter in association with
MATLAB-SJEC conducted one day Inteal Institute Level Hackathon as a part of
Smart India Hackathon 2020 on 07-02-2020. 10 teams from various departments
participated in the hackathon and finally 7 teams were selected by the jury
members and selected teams will be participating in the Smart India Hackathon
2020 to be held in the month of March & July 2020. The event was organized
by Mr Prashant Kurdekar, ISTE Chairperson-SJEC & Ms Nandini Maninarayan,
Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication.

hosted the Faculty
Development Programme on Teaching and Leaing, which was conducted from 13th to 18th
January, 2020 by Dr Claire Komives, Professor, Chemical & Materials
Engineering, San Jose State University, Califoia.
The event is aimed at
empowering teachers with technical skills in order to enhance the content
delivery and bring in transformations in the teaching-leaing process. The
training is intended to focus on design experiments, project-based leaing,
teaching students professional skills, writing joual papers for engineering
education, writing an effective research proposal and engineering ethics.
The FDP was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr
Claire Komives, Professor, Chemical and Materials Engineering at San Jose State
University, Califoia, USA, in the presence of Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa,
Incharge Director of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, Dr Yajnheswaran,
HOD of Civil Engineering Department at SJEC and Ms Bhavya, Convener of the
program.
Dr Rio D’Souza, while welcoming the gathering
said that the FDP provides a perfect opportunity for the teachers in the
technical forum to interact with Dr Claire who has been actively involved in
imparting her experience and vast knowledge in the field of teaching-leaing.
Dr Claire Komives said that her experiences
in participating in conferences and workshops related to engineering education
have helped her acquire skills to improvise the teaching-leaing process
without inflicting any additional burden on the teachers. She expressed
happiness on the conduction of the FDP and congratulated the efforts of the
college in this direction.
Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, in his presidential
address, spoke briefly about the usefulness of this FDP. While appreciating the
enthusiasm of faculty members in attending the FDP, he wished them a fruitful
leaing experience over the course of the next 5 days.
Ms Bhavya, Convener of the FDP proposed the
vote of thanks. The inaugural was compeered by Ms Vani D and Ms Vinitha
Pasanha.
Post inaugural, Dr Claire anchored an
intriguing session on teaching students design experiments for all the
participants.
Day 1 & 2, the session was on “Teaching students design experiments,
Orchestrating project-based leaing, Teaching students professional skills
throughout the curriculum” conducted on 13th and 14th
January 2020. In this session, the resource person, Dr Claire Komives
introduced the participants the advantages and disadvantages of using cook book
in the curriculum. She also explained about the structured lab. She gave an idea about self-management, social
awareness, organizational awareness, service orientation, relationship
management and leadership skills. She shared her idea about incorporating
professional skills, inductive leaing, project based leaing, collaborative
leaing methods in the class.
Day 3, Dr Claire introduced the participants to the “Engineering Education
Research” (EER). She inspired the participants to carry out engineering
education research. She explained the mission and history of EER. She gave an
insight about the core EER areas, engineering diversity and inclusiveness,
engineering assessment and measuring student leaing. She asked the
participants to form their own problem statement on engineering education and
motivated them to publish their engineering education research in the jouals.
Day
4, the session was on “Writing effective research proposals”, the resource
person introduced the participants to the concept of design thinking in order
to formulate the problem. Then she explained how to write the quantitative
impact statement. She shared her experience of how to start with the research
proposals, how to apply for funding from the different agencies. Participants
were also taught about the preliminary requirement that had to be taken care of
before proceeding with the project proposal. Different activities like brain
storming, think pair share, collaborative leaing were included throughout the
session which made it more interactive.
Day
5, Dr Claire Komives presented a topic on “Engineering Ethics”. She started the session by stating that every
individual should lea philosophy as ethics and philosophy help us to face the
challenges in life. She explained about
ethics and morality and how moral laws gove human actions but can be broken
unlike the laws of nature. She conducted
think pair share sessions where participants understood the concept of moral
relativism that is ‘what is right for one person may not be for another’. She said that the ultimate goal of man is
happiness but it should not be the possession of some goods with the exclusion
of others.
The
Department of Civil Engineering in association with ISTE-SJEC Student Chapter
organized a one-day industrial visit to Water Treatment Plant and Intake
structure at tumbe and Sewage Treatment Plant, Kavoor, Mangaluru on 18th
November 2019 for VII Semester students. Two faculty members Mr. Prashant
Kurdekar and Mr. Ajeeth accompanied a group of 56 students.
The main
objective of the visit was to give students exposure on the onsite water
treatment process, intake structures like jack well and pumping station and
also make them aware about how various wastewater treatment processes are
carried out in the municipal treatment plant.
The Department of Civil Engineering organised an
industrial visit to IRC Ready Mix Concrete Plant and Ganesh Cement Spun Poles
and Pipes factory at Industrial Area Baikampady and construction site visit to
Westline Signature, Nanthoor, Mangaluru on 17th October 2019 for final year
students. A total of 58 students participated in the visit. Mr Prashant
Kurdekar, Ms Apoorva K V and Mr Ajeeth B accompanied the students during the
visit.
The objective of the visit was to enhance the
practical knowledge of students wherein students could experience the
manufacturing process of RCC hume poles and ready-mix concrete. In the
construction site of Westline Signature students were exposed to system
formwork, bar bending, shear reinforcement and provision for HVAC in individual
flats of the apartment. Project Manager Er. Kaushik Rao informed students that
Westline Signature is the proposed tallest structure in south India of 53
floors and Mr Rajkiran Site Engineer briefed about the speciality of the
technologies used in present structure and also gave insight knowledge about
aluminium scaffolding & self-compacting concrete. Students were very
interactive with industry experts and site engineers and pose numerous
questions for better understanding.
A Technical Talk on “Avenues for Civil Engineers” was
organized by the Department of Civil Engineering in association with ISTE-SJEC
STUDENT Chapter, for the third year and final year students of Civil
Engineering on 09th October 2019 at 12.00 pm in Bishop Aloysius Paul
Hall, Third floor, Academic Block IV. The talk was delivered by Mr Maninarayan
K T, Construction and Contract Management Expert, Eptisa-BETS JV, Kathmandu
Nepal. The technical talk was a beyond syllabus activity for the third year and
final year students and was organized by Dr B Radheshyam, HOD-CE and Mr
Prashant Kurdekar, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering. The
technical talk aimed at providing knowledge and exposure to various job
opportunities and career development in field of Civil Engineering. The
technical talk provided a deep insight on the job aspects and their availability
and was highly appreciated by students and faculty members.
The program was inaugurated by our
esteemed HOD, Dr. B Radheshyam, Er. Bharath J., Er. Ujwal D’Souza and Mr.
Vijeth Kumar, President of NIRMAN Association, Department of Civil Engineering,
SJEC Mangaluru. The program was attended by the students of 2nd, 3rd
and 4th year Civil Engineering and organized by the Faculty
Coordinator of NIRMAN, Mr. Chitharanjan M., Dept of Civil Engineering.
Er. Bharath J. commenced the talk
with his presentation on Rainwater Harvesting. Sir discussed about the various
methods of rainwater harvesting, the applications of the process and the
benefits of it. He stressed on the importance of conserving existing water
resources and making efficient use of rainwater. Sir also discussed about
various unique projects implemented in the field of rainwater harvesting.
Er. Ujwal D’Souza continued the talk
with his presentation on Construction Equipment. Sir emphasized on the
importance of various construction equipment commonly used in construction and
way more advanced equipment, which is, used in advanced construction methods.
Sir discussed in detail the functions of construction equipment and provided
real life examples with pictures of the construction sites in mention.
Both the talks provided a broader
understanding of the topics to all the students and were very informative and
interactive. The program ended with a group photo of all the resource personnel
and Department staff members present.

Engineering, SJEC Mangaluru. The program was attended by the students of 2nd,
3rd and 4th year Civil Engineering and organized by the Faculty Coordinator of
NIRMAN, Mr. Chitharanjan M., Dept of Civil Engineering.
Dr. K. S Babunarayan who was the
guest of honor was introduced by Mr. Bhaskar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of
Civil Engineering, SJEC, Mangaluru. Dr. K. S Babunarayan emphasized on the
significance of the Innovative World of Civil Engineering. He encouraged the
students with his inspirational thoughts. He spoke about various magnificent
structures constructed all over the world and how it would’ve been impossible
for some of them to remain standing as they presently are. He stressed on how
important it is for a civil engineer to be thinking on the broader perspective and
be coming up with more innovative ideas and solutions to the ever-rising count
of problems in the world.
Er. Ashok Kumar was introduced by Ms.
Apoorva K. V., Assistant Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, SJEC,
Mangaluru.
Er. Ashok Kumar emphasized on the
importance of Construction Safety. He spoke about the causes and precautions to
be taken in the construction site. He had several videos of real-life incidents
of accidents in field, causing either temporary damage or permanent loss of
life. He was very thorough with all the precautions to be taken in the site and
stressed about the consequences to follow if certain rules were not followed.
At the end, sir had a video to explain one instance of an incident and the
various outcomes that one incident could lead to.
The Department of Civil Engineering organised an

September 2019 for third year students. A total of 63 students participated in
the visit. Ms Bhavya, Mr Manjunath B and Mr Chitharanjan M, accompanied the students during the visit.
The visit was aimed at enhancing the knowledge in RCC
construction. In the second site, Project Manager Er. Kaushik Rao explained

structure and also given insight knowledge about aluminium scaffolding &
self-compacting concrete. In the second site, Er Ujwal Dsouza, Director of
Marian Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. gave brief insight about the Construction of
Marian Park and its Foundation details. Er. Anirudh the project engineer of
Marian Park explained how particular building differs from other projects and
given enhanced knowledge on flat slab construction and its advantages. Students
also visited mock floor and visualized the finishing stage of construction.
The Department of Civil Engineering organised an

Paradise near Karangalpady on 24th September 2019 for third year students. A
total of 64 students participated in the visit. Mr Chitharanjan M, Ms Bhavya
and Mr Manjunath B accompanied the students during the visit.
The visit was aimed at enhancing the knowledge in RCC
construction. Skyline Signature is the proposed tallest structure in south
India of 53 floors, Project Manager Er. Kaushik Rao briefed about the
speciality of the technologies used in present structure and also given insight
knowledge about aluminium scaffolding, self-compacting concrete. In the second
site, the project engineer of Marian Park, Er. Anirudh explained how particular
building differs from other projects and given enhanced knowledge on flat slab
construction and its advantages, students also visited mock floor and
visualized the finishing stage of construction. In Lotus Paradise of Kadri Er.
Sanath explained about the importance of touch pile construction in case of
deep excavations, students also visited the construction place, and studies
reinforcement details of the footing and retaining wall.
