About Information Science Department

The Department of INFORMATION SCIENCE & ENGINEERING was established in the year 2007 with the objective of producing high-quality professionals to meet the demands of the emerging field of Information Technology.

The Department aims at imparting quality education with special emphasis for the all-round development of the students. The Department has an intake of 60 students. It is approved by the AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Government of India and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. The Department offers a combination of courses and projects that helps the students to cope up with the recent advancement in the IT industry.

The Department has well qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff. There are eight postgraduates and two undergraduates working as teaching staff in the department. Two faculty members are pursuing Ph.D. Highly qualified teaching community with a strong motto of teaching - learning processes are the main assets of the Department in guiding the students towards their strive to success.

The teaching faculties of the Department are well motivated and are passionate about their role as a mentor/guide in understanding the students needs/problems related to academic/ personal aspects. They are able to provide useful guidance to students as a measure to overcome their problems. The faculty members are frequently attending workshops and seminars conducted by various organizations to enhance their knowledge as well as a means for their research related activities. They are encouraging and motivating the students of the Department to pursue higher education and research related activities.

The Department is well sophisticated with three spacious class rooms, seven well equipped laboratories and a Department library which meets all the needs of the students as per the requirements of Visvesvaraya Technological University. The Department laboratory has ample workstation on the network with the Windows and Linux platform. The Department is having IBM server and other supporting servers to cater to the needs of network resources and management.

The students of the Department are trained to the needs of the IT industry through the Campus-Connect program of the Infosys Technologies Ltd. The faculty members are conducting bridge course programs for Java & J2EE, C#. Net programming by the way of laboratory sessions to provide practical exposure to the theoretical subjects. The project work of the students are framed to cater to the needs of the industry through different phases of evaluation procedures. Workshops and training on soft skills are arranged for the students involving extensive use of interactive and practical sessions to develop their skills and build up confidence thereby enhancing their placement opportunities.

The ISE Department Student association “INTAGLIO” mainly aims at making the students interact with industries and institutions as well as training them to meet their standards through seminars, workshops, and guest lectures from eminent personalities. Our venture is to have unique and innovative programs which will highlight the talent in the Information Science Department.

IQAC: workshop on Quality Assurance in Engineering Education through OBE

A Two-Day workshop on Quality Assurance in Engineering Education through OBE was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of SJEC on 30-31 January 2017 at Spoorthi Seminar Hall in the 7th Floor of Academic Block III.


The workshop began with a brief inaugural ceremony. The Vice Principal and Chairperson of IQAC, Dr Rio D’Souza, welcomed the gathering. Further, he gave an overview of the workshop to all the participants. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal of SJEC spoke about the importance of quality assurance in engineering education. Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director of SJEC in his presidential address expressed his concern on the quality of Engineering Education in general, and encouraged the participation of faculty to enhance the same. Dr Shreeranga Bhat, coordinator of the workshop proposed the vote of thanks, while Ms Ramya, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering compered the ceremony.


A total of 50 delegates participated in this workshop.

CSE – CIPHER: Technical Talk on Cloud Computing

CIPHER, the Student Association of Computer Science Engineering and Information Science Engineering had organized a technical talk on Cloud Computing for the students of 03rd and 04th year CSE by Prof. Shreenath Acharya, Assistant Professor, and Department of CSE - SJEC. The talk was held on 5th February 2016 in Spoorthi Conference Hall, Seventh floor of Academic Block-III from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Mr Rayan Rahul D’Souza from 6th SEM CSE ‘B’ section welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker to the audience. Dr Rio D'souza, HOD-CSE, florally welcomed Prof. Shreenath Acharya. In his message, Dr Rio D’Souza gave an insight to Cloud Computing and also its significance. In his talk, Prof Shreenath Acharya gave detailed introduction to Cloud, the architecture of Cloud, highlighted the importance of Cloud and also the Cloud service providers. He also stressed upon the topics which could be taken as projects during the 8th semester. The session was very informative and helped the students in understanding cloud computing concept better. Ms Arya of 8th semester expressed her views on the session and explained the importance of Cloud computing in industry, academics and in placements. Ms Jevita Tina D’Souza of 6th sem CSE ‘A’ section concluded the session by proposing the vote of thanks.

Inauguration: INTAGLIO for the academic year 2014-2015

The Association of the Department of Information Science & Engineering commenced its activities for the academic year 2014-15 with an inaugural ceremony on 21 August 2014, at 3:00pm, with a formal program in the Mechanical Seminar Hall, Academic Block II.

Mr Rajesh Kotian, Project Manager, Prasanna Technologies, Mangalore, was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Rev. Fr. Rohith D'Costa, Assistant Director, presided over the function. Also present as Guests of Honor were Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Director In-charge and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal. The other dignitaries were Dr Rio D’Souza, HOD, ISE; Ms. Aparna K, Staff Coordinator, INTAGLIO.

The program began on an auspicious note with the prayer. Association Secretary, Ms Melissa Saldanha, presented the welcome address which was followed by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Association President, Ms Ruth Rodrigues, then presented the Annual Report on the various activities conducted during the previous academic session and the objectives for the coming year.

Mr Rajesh Kotian offered guidelines for students regarding future endeavors - whether to go for higher studies or work in the industry a few years before it. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis encouraged the students to keep INTAGLIO vibrant by organizing different activities and strive for success with hard work. Dr Rio D'Souza emphasized the need for students to participate in more activities through the Association and also, the effect of technology in today's world. In his presidential speech, Fr Rohith D’Costa said that students should learn to take risks in life and never give up. They should keep on trying.

The achievements of outstanding students of the previous academic year, 2013-2014, were recognized and honored with the distribution of prizes by Fr. Ajith Menezes. Fr Rohith D’Costa also honored the Chief Guest with a memento.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms Mithashree Kulal, Treasurer, INTAGLIO, followed by the college anthem. Ms Natasha Hebbar VII, ISE, was the compere for the event.
