The Inauguration of Classes for First Year B.E., for the academic year 2017-2018, at St Joseph Engineering College – Vamanjoor, Mangaluru was held on 7th August 2017 at 9:30 am in Kalam Auditorium, Academic Block II. The inaugural ceremony was attended by all the First Year students along with their Parents.
Ms Ivy Lenet Saldanha, Head Human Resources, Strategic Engineering Division, Tata Power Company Limited, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director SJEC, presided over the ceremony. Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director - SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal–SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal – SJEC, and Dr Ramananda H.S., Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics and also the Convener of the program, were the other dignitaries on the dais.
The program commenced with an invocation from the First Year Students. Dr Rio D’Souza, welcomed the gathering to the inaugural ceremony. In his welcome address, Dr Rio D’Souza spoke about the journey and transformation of SJEC in the past 15 years to become one of the leading Educational Institution in the region. He asked the students to work hard and to strive towards achieving their goals.
The Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the dais formally inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp. A symbolic inauguration of classes for the new academic year was performed with Students’ representatives from individual Departments and their Parents along with a Staff, each unfurling the flags of the five respective Departments.
Dr Joseph Gonsalvis addressed the gathering and welcomed the new batch of students to the family of Josephites. He highlighted the necessity of students following the rules and regulations of the college in transforming themselves into professionals. His address also touched upon the distractions faced by students with regard to social media, telephone, etc., and the challenges faced by institutions and the parents in leading the students on the right path. He mentioned about the student monitoring system in the college. He briefed about the facilities available in the Institution.

A compendium containing the research papers published by SJEC Faculty and Students in National and International Journals and Conferences was released on the occasion by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director-SJEC. Dr Felcy D’Souza, Librarian – SJEC, briefed the gathering about the compendium.
Ms Ivy Lenet Saldanha began her address by welcoming the First Year students to SJEC. She asked the students to be energetic and showcase commitment and hard work to their cause of becoming qualified Engineers. She quoted “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you, If you are determined to learn no one can stop you”. She said it’s very important when you join new institute to make a good beginning effectively. She spoke to students about the many challenges and opportunities which life will throw at them and stated that the ball is always in their court to be played to fulfill their dreams with commitment and hard work. She stressed about team work which will help to complete good projects and help in nation building.
In his presidential address, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, welcomed the first years to SJEC family and spoke of the commitment of the institution to provide quality education to its students. He thanked the Chief Guest for motivating the students. He highlighted the key achievements of SJEC in terms of academic excellence. He asked the students to trust themselves, trust in god, and to work hard which is the way to success. He requested the parents to treat their son or daughter as responsible engineering students and to cooperate with the Management. Director wished all the first year students the very best in all their academic endeavors in SJEC.
Dr Ramananda H.S., the convener of the program offered Vote of Thanks. Ms Olivia Sequeira and Ms Ramya M compered the programme. The inaugural ceremony was followed by an orientation programme, in which the Heads of all Departments showcased their individual Departments to the new students. Parents also participated in a separate session involving the challenges to guide the students in the path of excellence.
