FEEL TEACHER: Learning and Development Intervention

A 3-day FEEL (Felicitating Excellence in Effective Leadership) TEACHER Learning and Development Intervention was conducted at SJEC from 2nd to 4th July 2018, in association with College for Leadership and Human Resource Development (CLHRD), at Kalam Auditorium. The main objective of this event was to promote participatory conceptualization, experiential learning, Socratic questioning, confronting dialogues and skill-drills, which go a long way in enhancing the life skills of the faculty, thereby contributing to the quality of learning at SJEC.

In total, 84 participants from the Departments of Basic Sciences, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, MBA, MCA, Physical Education, Training and Placements along with the Director of SJEC participated in the programme.  

The event was inaugurated by the Principal of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza at 9:00 AM on 2nd July 2018, who introduced Prof. Sunney Tharappan, Director of CLHRD as the Chief Facilitator of the programme to the gathering. He urged all the participants to identify key skills required to become effective teachers and make the best use of this training intervention. The Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza and Assistant Director Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa were in attendance.

During the course of the three-day intervention, Prof Sunney Tharappan addressed various themes like the history of Human Resources, Importance of Human Values and Principles, Self Esteem, Communication to Influence, Emotional Intelligence, Listening Skills and Team Building. The event focused on the different methodologies that can be adapted in a classroom setup to engage students in an effective manner. He urged every teacher to act as a catalyst and to contribute to the holistic development of the students. He also encouraged all the teachers to promote communication and effective discussions among the students in the classroom to help the students improve their soft-skills thus making them employable.

The sessions were scheduled 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on all 3 days wherein the participants were divided into three batches with one Master Facilitator organizing each batch. They were further divided into different teams according to the type of activity conducted. The themes were presented through participatory conceptualization and experiential learning. The participants enjoyed the activities and discussions throughout the session.

Prof Sunney Tharappan was assisted by his team of Master Facilitators that included Mr Sathyendra Bhat, Assistant Professor-MCA, Dr Shakila B, Assistant Professor-MBA and Ms Sangeeta Ferrao, Placement Officer. The 3-day programme was coordinated by Mr Chitrakumar, who acted as a bridge between SJEC and CLHRD. The programme concluded with a message of gratitude from all the participants.
