The National Conference on Smart Computing and Control - 2017 (NCSCC -17) is organised by the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Computer Applications at St Joseph Engineering College - Vamanjoor, Mangaluru, in association with Scientific Academic Publishers (SAP) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). St Joseph Engineering College, one of the prominent Engineering Institutions in Karnataka, takes immense pleasure in organizing this National Conference on Smart Computing and Control (NCSCC).
The theme of the conference is Intelligent Systems for Smart Environment. The Conference will be a platform to focus on the core technological developments in computation, control and other emerging technologies. NCSCC is to be held on the June 2016 to May 2019 in the College premises. NCSCC-17 aims to provide an opportune forum and vibrant platform for Researchers, Academicians, Scientists and Industrial Practitioners to share their original research work, patents, findings and practical development experiences on the specific new challenges and emerging issues confronting the nation.
St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) was started in the year 2002 by the Diocese of Mangaluru. The college is approved by AICTE and affiliated to VTU, Belagavi. SJEC is a self-financing Catholic minority institution whose vision is to be a global premier institute of quality education and research. The college is situated in a lush green campus spread across 25 acres.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) was established in the year 2002 with an intake for BE program of 60, which was increased to 120 in the year 2012. The Department also offers M.Tech. and Research programmes in CSE which were started in the year 2011. The Department was provisionally accredited by NBA for two years from June 2013 to May 2015. The Department is re- accredited by NBA under OBE for three years from July 2016 to June 2019.
The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) was established in the year 2002 with a mission to provide holistic personality development of students through interaction with industry, academia and alumni. Presently the Department is offering four programmes: B.E in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, M.Tech in Power Electronics, M.Sc. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and PhD in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. The Department is re- accredited by NBA under OBE for three years from July 2016 to June 2019.
The Department of Computer Applications offers the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme, started in the year 2008, with an intake of 60. The mission of the Department is to meet the global needs and challenges through training professionals who can work with interest to support the society.

In these days, there is a growing interest in providing connection, communication, and inter-networking between devices, physical objects, and people, or "Things”. Referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet of Everything (IoE), it encompasses technologies and solutions that enable integration of real world data and services into the current information networks. IoT connects large number of things (sensors, actuators, tags etc) to run variety of applications.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept where physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify themselves to other devices. Most people understand the benefits of being connected with computers, tablets and smart phones. IoT describes a world where anything can be connected and can communicate in an intelligent fashion. In other words, with the Internet of Things, the physical world is becoming one big information system. A variety of applications can be designed for IoT Systems. However, there ae lot of challenges in meaningful use of IoT and Big Data Analytics is one of the most important of these.
With data coming from different sources, there is a need to store and analyze such huge amounts of data. Big data is the term for a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications. The challenges include capture, storage, search, sharing, transfer, analysis and visualization of such large data sets. Big Data is characterized by Variety, Volume and Velocity. There are different types of data: structured, semi structured and unstructured. The presence of unstructured data emanating from different applications is another major challenge. Analyzing unstructured data to retrieve information needs the use of different techniques.
The trend to use larger data sets is due to the additional information derivable from analysis of a single large set of related data, and the subject of Big Data Analytics has emerged. The talk will discuss different aspects of IoT and Big Data.

Dr Anirban Basu www.anirbanbasu.in is a BE and MTech in Electronics and received a Master’s in Computer Science from Carleton University, Canada and a PhD in Computer Science for his work on High Performance Computing. He has more than 35 years experience in Academia, advanced Research & Development, commercial Software Industry, Consultancy and Corporate Training.
He started his career in Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata in 1979, and joined CDAC in 1989 to play a key role in design, development, and performance analysis of India’s first Supercomputer PARAM. From 1995 he worked in Siemens Information Systems Ltd., Computer Associates, etc. in senior/ top management positions.
Since 2010, Dr Anirban Basu has been sharing his time between Industry and Academics. Besides being Chief Consultant to PQR Software, Bangalore he is Professor in Computer Science and Engineering and a Research Supervisor in several reputed universities guiding PhD research on Software Engineering, Cloud Computing, Green IT etc..In 2014, he was awarded a project by the Vision Group on Science and Technology (headed by Bharat Ratna Prof C N R Rao) of the Government of Karnataka to work on Software Security.
In 2016, he has once again been awarded a project by VGST to work on Green Software Engineering. He has guided 3 PhD Research Scholars in Computer Science, and supervising 6 more PhD Scholars. He has published about 80 research papers in reputed national and international journal and in conference proceedings, coauthored five books and serves as a Member of the Editorial Board/ Reviewer of several International Journals.
His book on “Software Quality Assurance, Testing and Metrics” published by Prentice Hall India in August 2015 is drawing readers from all over.
Dr Anirban Basu a Fellow of The Institution of Engineers (India), and is a recipient of a number of awards, which includes the prestigious 1985 Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship in Computer Science, Old Centralian Medal (for standing first in first class in faculty of engineering in BE examination), Computer Engineering Division Gold Medals of The Institution of Engineers (India), Significant Achievement Award of CSI etc..
He was President of Computer Society of India (CSI) - www.csi-india.org, India’s largest and oldest body of IT professionals till March 2017.>
Dr Bighnaraj is currently working as a Scientist at TCS Research & Innovations, Bangalore. At TCS, he is working in various projects on Wireless Networks such as Information Centric Networks (ICN), Device-to- Device (D2D) communications, Cloud Robotics, Tactile Internet, etc. Before joining TCS he was a Research Scientist-I at SDSMT, USA, and was working there on a NASA funded project on Delay Tolerant TCP protocol for Deep Space Communications. Bighnaraj holds a BSc degree in Physics and two Master degrees (MSc and MTech) in Electronic Science and Computer Science, respectively. He obtained his PhD from IIT Delhi (2012) where he worked on cross-layer optimization problems in Wireless Sensor and Ad-hoc Networks. He has research experience of more than 10 years in different fields of wireless and NextGen networks. He has several national and international conference, journal publications and filed patents to his credit.
