MCA: TechPrints 5.0

TechPrints 5.0 was a National Level Technical Paper Presentation Competition under the banner of TechnoCrats, which was being organized for the fifth time in the Department of Computer Applications at SJEC. The event was held on Wednesday, 26th April 2017 at the Spoorthi Conference Hall, 7th Floor, Academic Block-III and was open for the students of MCA, M.Tech., MS, MSc (Computer Science) and BE (CS & IS). Papers were called for the topics under the broad categories of Intelligent Information Processing, which included Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Neural Networks and Data Mining as one track and Networks and Computing which included Computer Networks, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Mobile Computing and Internet of Things on the other side. There was an overwhelming response from the students of neighboring colleges which saw 30 papers being received by the Department. At the end, 24 papers were shortlisted and were called for presentation on the occasion out of which 11 were under the track of Intelligent Information Systems, and 13 were under the track of Networks and Computing.

TechPrints 5.0 was inaugurated with the lighting the lamp by the dignitaries including Dr Vasudeva, Professor & Head, SMVITM, Bantakal, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Programme. The other dignitaries present on the dais were the President of the Function, Rev Fr Joseph Lobo, Director, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal/Dean-MCA and Ms Sumangala N, I/C HOD-MCA.

The Chief Guest, Dr Vasudeva, addressed the gathering wherein he voiced his opinion on coping up with the growth in technology. Inaugural programme also saw the release of the proceedings of TechPrints 5.0, by the Chief Guest along with the other dignitaries present during the occasion.

The conclusion of the formal function was followed by the keynote address on Social Network Analysis by the Chief Guest after which, parallel presentations were held at 2 different venues simultaneously. The presentations under Intelligent Information Processing were judged by Mr Sunil Kamath, Assistant Professor-CSE and Mr Hareesh B, Assistant Professor-MCA whereas the presentations under Networks and Computing were judged by Mr Shreenath Acharya, Assistant Professor-CSE and Mr Athokpam Bikramjit Singh, Assistant Professor-MCA.

TechPrints 5.0 came to an end with Valedictory Programme on the same evening. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal - SJEC and the President of the Programme was Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal/Dean-MCA at SJEC; who was present on the dais along with the other dignitaries.

MCA - TechnoCrats: Talk on Plagiarism Free Report Writing

In view of Plagiarism Check by VTU for MTech/MBA/MCA Dissertation Reports, in order to inculcate the habit of respecting the academic integrity and discipline, a talk on “Plagiarism Free Report Writing” was organized by the Department of Computer Applications under the banner of TechnoCrats for the students of VI Semester MCA, IV Semester MBA as well as IV Semester MTech on Friday, 7th April 2017 from 10.00 am to 11.15 am in Fr Fred Memorial Hall of the college.

 

The resource person for the talk was Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal - SJEC, who handled the session. The talk was intended to cover aspects of Anti Plagiarism regulations applicable to PG Project Thesis and Usage of Plagiarism Checking Tools. During the talk, the Vice Principal stressed the importance of plagiarism free report writing and stressed on the fact that plagiarism is not ethical. In his lecture, he explained the concept of plagiarism, types of plagiarism, 404 errors, re-tweet and the relevance of paraphrasing.

 

The Vice Principal also presented some of the tips for avoiding plagiarism and urged the students to come up with original work. He highlighted the importance of planning the report, consultation with the guide, taking effective notes, citation of the sources, and referencing. In addition to the above, he also presented the VTU guidelines for submitting the report and the permitted similarity index.

 

Apart from the MBA, MCA and MTech students, the faculties of MBA, MCA, CSE and ECE departments were also present during the talk. Overall, the session provided useful insights to the students on plagiarism free report writing.

MCA: Mini Project Exhibition-2016

TechnoCrats - Computer Applications Students Association of SJEC under the aegis of the Department of Computer Applications organized a Mini Project Exhibition and Competition for V Semester MCA students on Thursday, 24th November 2016 at 10:00 AM in the MCA Laboratories, Academic Block-II. The main intention of this exhibition was to provide a platform for the MCA students to showcase their projects to the staff and students of the department as well as interested students of other departments. The exhibition also allowed the students to interact with their peers and enhance their technical skills.

The event began with an informal congregation in the presence of the dignitaries which included Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director-SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director-SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal-SJEC along with the judges for the exhibition Ms Nethravathi P, HOD-MCA, Shree Devi Institute of Technology and Mr Shreenath Acharya, Assistant Professor-CSE. Ms Prithvi V Shet from III Semester MCA welcomed the gathering and the judges were welcomed florally. The judges then unveiled a booklet consisting of a compilation of all the Mini Project abstracts. This was followed by short spotlight demonstrations by the members of each group to introduce their projects with poster, which was evaluated independently by the 2 judges. The occasion witnessed 27 groups each comprising of at the most two students exhibiting their work. At the end, the judges were felicitated with a memento as a token of appreciation and gratitude.

The best project award was bagged by the project titled Image Characterization Using Image Segmentation which was the work carried out by Ms Chaithra A H and Ms Nireeksha A under the guidance of Mr Hareesh B, Assistant Professor-MCA. The second place was shared by the projects titled Inferring the Meaning of Bilingual Suffixes and Prefixes on Score of Recurrence: Text Mining carried out by Ms Namitha J (guided by Ms Kavitha K Mahesh, Assistant Professor-MCA) & ATM-Smart Banking carried out by Ms Soniya Joseph and Ms Surabhi Shetty K (guided by Mr Ragesh Raju, Assistant Professor-MCA). 

MCA: Joshiana - Final Report

The TechnoCrats - Students Association of Department of Computer Applications of SJEC conducted Joshiana 7.0, a 2 day National Level IT Fest for the students of MCA, MS, M.Sc, M.Tech. and BE (CS & IS). The fest was organized under the aegis of the Department of Computer Applications.

Joshiana 7.0 was inaugurated with the lighting the lamp by the dignitaries which included Mr K Srinivas Rao, Director-Software Quality Assurance (SQA), Robosoft Technologies Pvt Ltd, Udupi, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. This was followed by the unveiling of the trophies for which the participants were competing against each other.

The events were conducted by the MCA students over 2 days and the judges were invited from in and out of the college. All in all 29 teams participated in Joshiana 7.0 and we had 293 participants visiting our college and being a part of the fest.

The fest comprised of 9 events namely - Steganography (Coding), Delineation (Web Designing), Exasperation to the hilt (Treasure Hunters), Assemblage (App Development), Get Gobsmacked (IT Quiz), End up Stupified (Best IT Manager), Conglomeration (Tangled), How nonplussed can you get (IT Parliament), Belaboured IT (IT Tech Host) and Inquivesta (Culturals).

There were eminent personalities judging our events from in and out of the college. Some of the judges called from outside included RJ Anurag from 93.5 Red FM and VJ Soujanya Hedge from Namma TV, who judged the final round of the event Best Manager in addition to Mr Shreemukha Sullia, CEO of C.Key and Buttistore.com, who was the Quiz Master for the final round of the event IT Quiz. The judges for all the events were felicitated by the respective Event Managers by handing them a memento as a token of appreciation.

The Runners-Up award for Joshiana 7.0 was awarded to Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology, Beeri and the Overall Championship was bagged by Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru.

MCA: Joshiana - Inauguration

The Technocrats - Students Association of Department of Computer Applications of SJEC inaugurated Joshiana 7.0, a 2-day National Level IT Fest for the students of MCA, MS, M.Sc., M.Tech., and BE (CS & IS). The fest is organized under the aegis of the Department of Computer Applications.

Joshiana 7.0 was inaugurated on Wednesday, 28th September 2016 with the lighting the lamp by the dignitaries, which included, Mr K Srinivas Rao, Director-Software Quality Assurance (SQA), Robosoft Technologies Pvt Ltd, Udupi, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. The other dignitaries present on the dais were Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo-Director, SJEC who presided over the ceremony, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa-Assistant Director, SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis-Principal, SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza-Vice Principal/Dean-MCA, SJEC, Ms Sumangala N-I/C HOD MCA, SJEC, Mr Bikramjit Athokpam- Convener of Joshiana 7.0, Ms Prithvi V Shet-President, TechnoCrats and Ms Samarpan Preethi-Secretary, TechnoCrats.

The function began by the invocation of the Divine by Ms Helita Gras and group from III year MCA. The gathering was welcomed by Ms Sumangala N-I/C HOD MCA. Ms Prithvi V Shet, the President of The Technocrats, briefed the gathering of the events that would be held over the 2-days. This was followed by the Lighting of the Lamp which officially declared Joshiana 7.0 open and the unveiling of the trophies for which the participants were competing against each other.

The Chief Guest, Mr K Srinivas Rao addressed the gathering wherein he voiced his opinion on coping up with the growth in technology. The Principal and The Director also spoke conveying their best wishes to the participants as well as the organizers.

The curtains were drawn on the Inauguration Ceremony with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms Vinaya S, the Treasurer of TechnoCrats. The MC’s role for the inaugural ceremony was donned by Ms Surabhi Shetty K from III year MCA.

MCA - Technocrats: Inauguration of TechPrints 4.0

TechPrints 4.0 – A National Level Technical Paper Presentation Competition organized by the Department of Computer Applications under the banner of its Students Association - TechnoCrats, was held on Wednesday, 6th April 2016 in the Spoorthi Conference Hall, 7th Floor of Academic Block-III. TechPrints 4.0 provided a platform for budding professionals to share their ideas and discuss about the advancements in technology.

TechPrints 4.0 was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries including Mr Harish Kumar, CEO of Accolade Tech Solutions - Mangaluru, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. The other dignitaries present on the dais were Rev Fr. Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director, and the President of the Function, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal/Dean-MCA, Ms Sumangala N, I /C HOD MCA and Mr Gururaja S, Convener-TechPrints 4.0.  The Chief Guest, Mr Harish Kumar, addressed the gathering wherein, he voiced his opinion on coping up with the growth in technology. He also spoke about the recent trends in Android Application Development which was well received by the audience. The President of the Function, Dr Rio D’Souza appreciated the staff and students of the Department of MCA for putting up a great show. He also urged the students of the Department and the participants to take part in more such technical events wherein they get to test their technical mettle. Inaugural function also saw the release of the proceedings of TechPrints 4.0, by the Chief Guest along with the other dignitaries present during the occasion.

The presentations under Stream 1 are being judged by Dr Reeja S R, Associate Professor-CSE and Mr Raghavendra Achar, Assistant Professor-CSE whereas the presentations under Stream 2 are being judged by Mr Shreenath Acharya, Assistant Professor-CSE and Mr Sunil Kamath, Assistant Professor-CSE.

Inauguration of Yuvalakshya 2016

Yuvalakshya 2016 - a UG Level Fest is being organized by the Departments of Business Administration (MBA) and Computer Applications (MCA) of St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru. The fest is being organized for the students of BCA, BSc, BCom and BBM students from in and around Karnataka.

Yuvalakshya 2016 was inaugurated on Wednesday, 10th February 2016 with the lighting the lamp by the dignitaries which included Mr Brian Fernandes, Chief Officer-Operations, Spearhead Media [P] Ltd, who was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. The other dignitaries present on the dais were Rev Fr Joseph Lobo, Director-SJEC who presided over the ceremony, Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director-SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal-SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal/Dean-MCA-SJEC, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean MBA/Convener Yuvalakshya and Ms Anushree Raj, HOD MCA/Co-Convener Yuvalakshya.

The function began by the invocation of the Divine. The gathering was welcomed by Ms Varsha Baliga - I MBA, who extended warm wishes to all the people present during the Inaugural and dignitaries were then felicitated by the students. This was followed by the Lighting of the Lamp which officially declared Yuvalakshya 2016 open.

The Chief Guest, Mr Brian Fernandes addressed the gathering wherein he stressed the importance of excelling in the field of an individual’s choice. He mentioned that every individual is unique and special in their own right. He also urged the participants to compete with themselves in order to get the best out of them. At the end, he wished that Yuvalakshya would become a grand success and appreciated the organizers for organizing an event of this stature. This was followed by the addressing of the gathering by the Principal and Director who motivated the participants with their words of wisdom.

The newsletters of MBA Department - Yuktha and MCA Department - Tantrakosha, were released by the dignitaries during the occasion.

The curtains were drawn on the Inauguration Ceremony with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr Johnson Mascarenhas, I MBA, thereby declaring the fest open to all. The MC’s role for the inaugural ceremony was donned by Ms Diana Mathias from I year MBA. The Inaugural programme was followed by a video presentation which introduced SJEC to the participants from various UG Colleges.

The events are being conducted by the students of MBA and MCA with the judges being invited from in and out of the college. All in all 25 teams have registered for Yuvalakshya 2016 under BCom and BBM category and 27 teams under the category of BCA and BSc. Around 500 participants are being a part of the fest.

The fest is comprised of 9 events namely - Ashwamedha (Business Quiz), Padmavyuha (Mad Ad), Akriti (Painting) and Koshadhyaksh (Treasure Hunt) which are being conducted by the department of MBA for the students of BCom and BBM along with IT Quiz, IT Collage, IT Product Launch, IT Dumb Charades and Gaming which are being conducted by the department of MCA for the students of BCA and BSc. The events are designed to test the management and technical mettle of the participants.

JOSHIANA 5.0: Department of Computer Applications

JOSHIANA 5.0, a two-day National Level IT Fest for students of MCA, M Tech, MS and BE (CS & IS) was organized by Technocrats – the Student Association of the Department of Computer Applications on 26 and 27 September 2014, on the college campus.

The inaugural ceremony on 26 September 2014, began with the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries which included Rev Fr Denzil Lobo, Director of AIMIT & Rector of St Aloysius College, Mangalore, who was the Chief Guest for the function. Rev Fr Denzil addressed the gathering and voiced his opinion on coping with the growth in technology. He also stressed on entrepreneurship and the culture to be followed in the IT industry.

The program was followed by the unveiling of trophies to be won for different competitions under the aegis of Joshiana 5.0. The official logo of Technocrats was also unveiled on the occasion along with the launch of the Android Application developed for Joshiana 5.0.

Joshiana 5.0 included 9 events over a span of two days in which 16 college teams and 180 participants were involved. The competitions were judges by faculty and experts from different fields.

RJ Joel and RJ Anirudh from Big 92.7 FM, judged the Mock Press round of Best IT Manager and the final round of Product Launch.

Dr Jeny Rajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NITK Surathkal judged the final round of IT Parliament.

Mr Yathiraj from Satya Sai Loka Seva Trust Institution judged the final round of Web Designing.

Mr Dileep Malani was the Quiz Master for the final round of IT Quiz.

Mr Vishwas Kamath and Mr Sunil George, experts in the field of Stress Interviews, judged the final round of the event Best IT Manager.

Joshiana 5.0 came to a close with the Valedictory Function on 27 September in the presence of Mr Dikshith Raj, Founder & CEO, CodeCraft Technologies, Mangalore, who was the Chief Guest for the function. Mr Dikshith Raj spoke about finding fun in studies and picking up crucial aspects of programming which would help students achieve great things in life.

The Overall Championship was bagged by Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal.

The Runners-up Award was won by Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil.

Freshers Day: Department of Computer Applications for the 2014-2017 batch

In keeping with tradition, TECHNOCRATS, the Student Association of the Post Graduate Department of Computer Applications, organized Freshers Day on 22 August 2014 at 2:45 pm, in the Mechanical Conference Hall, to welcome the incoming students of 2014-2017.

The formal function was attended by Chief Guest, Director In-charge, Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, and was presided over by Principal, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Assistant Director, Rev Fr Rohith D’costa; Vice Principal, Dr Rio D’souza; Ms Anushree Raj, I/C HOD, MCA; Staff Coordinator, Ms Kavitha K Mahesh.

The program commenced with an invocation by Ms Preema Pereira and Ms Ona Pinto, V MCA. Ms Vinaya Naik, V MCA, welcomed the gathering and this was followed by floral felicitation of the dignitaries.

In his address, the Chief Guest welcomed the freshers to the SJEC family and encouraged them to come out of their webs and prove themselves by accepting the privilege of being part of this institution. The other dignitaries also inspired the students by speaking of the fine impression that the seniors had left with respect to academic and extra-curricular activities and the need for taking up similar challenges and responsibilities. They also stressed the fact that it is the fresher’s responsibility to keep up the traditions of the department by maintaining the same spirit and outlook.

The curtains were drawn on the formal event with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms Nisha K, III MCA. Ms Fariyal Arif, V MCA, compered the event.

After the program, the students of III and V MCA conducted various interesting games for the Freshers and exciting prizes were given to the winners. The informal interaction created a comfortable atmosphere which whole-heartedly welcomed the Freshers to the MCA family at SJEC.

MCA: Farewell for the Class of 2017

The Farewell Function for MCA 2014–2017 batch was conducted on Friday, 07th April 2017 in Bishop Aloysius Paul Conference Hall. The function was organized by I and II year MCA students of SJEC.

The event began with a formal ceremony at 11:45 A.M.  Rev. Fr. Joseph J Lobo –Director SJEC presided over the function and Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal SJEC was the Chief Guest of the occasion. The other dignitaries present were Rev. Fr. Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director – SJEC and Dr. Rio D’Souza - Vice Principal SJEC, who graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. Ms Sumangala N – I/C HOD-MCA and Ms Kavitha K Mahesh, – Staff Coordinator of the event were also present.

The formal function began with the invocation of the Divine by Ms Vinaya and group, II year MCA.  Ms Shwetha Vatsa, I year MCA welcomed the gathering which was followed by floral felicitation of the dignitaries by the students.

As a token of love and appreciation, the outgoing students were presented with mementos. Students from the outgoing batch who had exhibited appreciable performances in academics, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities were recognized and rewarded with Special prizes.

The President of the function, Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, while quoting the words of Sri Adi Shankara on maturity, spoke on the qualities of a matured individual following which, he said, every individual would attain a happy matured life. The other dignitaries inspired the students to take up challenges and responsibilities with confidence, reminded them of their social and moral responsibilities and wished the best for all outgoing students in their future endeavors.

With the Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Vinaya S, II year MCA, the curtains were drawn on the formal function. Ms. Prithvi Shet, II year MCA anchored the event.

The formal function was followed by lunch and informal function thereafter. Various interesting games were conducted for the outgoing students by the students of I and II year MCA and exciting prizes were given to the winners. The outgoing students were whole-heartedly bid farewell from the SJEC-MCA family.
