About Mathematics Department

The DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS was established in the year 2002 and has senior and experienced faculty together with young, dynamic faculty members.  The Department has 10 teaching faculty with teaching experience ranging from 3years to 25 years. The Department consists of one associate professor, 5 assistant professors and 4 Lecturers with Masters Degree in Mathematics. Presently one of our faculty members is having Ph.D and one pursuing his Ph.D studies in M.I.T. Manipal.

Our Department provides a strong foundation of Mathematical basics which are building blocks of all subjects of Engineering fields. We also teach very essential subjects of M.B.A , M.C.A, M.Tech. which are helpful for these masters degree students. We teach some special subjects for Computer Science and Information Science students like Discrete Mathematical Structures and Graph Theory. A good number of Computer Science students are opting for mathematical subjects as their electives in higher semesters.

MAT: FDP on Linear Algebra and its Applications & Statistics and Queuing Theory

On January 07, 2017 the Department of Mathematics at SJEC conducted a FDP on Linear Algebra and its Applications and Statistics and Queuing Theory, in Bethania Hall for the benefit of Faculty of Mathematics and other Departments of the College. The first session was by Dr M.R. Arulalan, Professor in the Department of ECE at NITK - Suratkal on Linear Algebra and its Applications.  The Second session was by Dr Sumathi, Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at MIT - Manipal on Statistics and Queuing theory. 23 Faculty members from various Departments participated in the FDP.

The FDP started at 9:30 am with an introduction about the programme and a formal introduction of the first speaker Dr M.R. Arulalan by Ms Salma Shabnam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics.  Dr M.R. Arulalan in his talk explained the following aspects to the audience.

·       LTI-Linear Time Invariant systems and converting them into matrices and using properties of matrices to solve them.

·       Relation between Laplace, Fourier and Z-transforms and their uses in signal and systems.

At the end of his talk, Dr Arulalan answered all the questions put forth by the participants.

After the tea break, Dr Sumathi in her talk discussed the following topics.

·       Definition and basics of  Statistics  and Garch Model which is widely used by researchers to analyze the data

·       Queuing theory, its different forms and their applications in research.

Dr Ramananda H.S, Head of the Mathematics Department at SJEC felicitated the speakers. Both sessions were well appreciated by all the participants.

The FDP was attended by 9 Faculty members from Mathematics, 5 from ECE, 3 from EEE, 2 from MBA, 01 from MCA, 01 from ME.

Inauguration: Research Center in the Department of Mathematics

The newly recognized (VTU) Research Center in the Department of Mathematics at SJEC was inaugurated on 31st July, 2014 at 3:30 PM by Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Director – In Charge, SJEC. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director – SJEC, along with Rev. Fr Joseph Cardoza, Campus Minister & Counselor – SJEC were the other dignitories present. Dr Ramananda H.S., HOD of Mathematics and his team of Faculty members organized the function.

The Research Center offers Ph.D Programme in accordance with the regulations and guidelines in force. The permission is for one year starting from the academic year 2014 - 2015.

In addition to the Department of Mathematics, SJEC currently possess VTU approved Research Centers in the Engineering Departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering; offering Ph.D and M.Sc (Engg.) by research programs. The Basic Science Departments of Physics and Chemistry also possess VTU recognized research center offering Doctoral Program (Ph.D). In addition to the above, the Department of Business Administration also offers Doctoral Program (Ph.D) through its VTU recognized research center.
