and Electronics Engineering (EELS), Torque student association
& Eco club organized a talk on "Climate
Emergency' for VI semester EEE and mechanical engineering students on 17.05.2023
from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Mr. H. Shashidar Shetty,
General Secretary, and Mr. Benedict Feandes, Member, National
Environment Care Foundation (NECF), Mangaluru were the resource persons. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness of nature
preservation through renewable energy sources and the planting of trees. Mr
Benedict Feandes provided information on deforestation and fossil fuels
ruining the environment through Co2 emission and global warming. He stressed
the role of planting trees by students to save nature for future
generations. Mr Shashidar Shetty shared his experience as an
environmentalist and called the students to be volunteers in the service of
nature.
TORQUE – Mechanical Engineering Students’ Association
in association with Student Welfare and Alumni Group (SWAG) conducted a
technical talk and alumni interaction for the III Sem Mechanical Engineering
students on 17th Oct 2019 at 3:00pm in Prerana Hall. The guest
speaker and the alumnus of 2007 batch, Dr Vijeesh Vijayan, presently working as
Asst. Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NMAMIT Nitte
delivered a talk on “Challenges and advances in resistance spot welding of
advanced high strength steels and aluminium alloys for future electric car
vehicles”. During presentation, speaker mentioned about the basics of
resistance spot welding, influencing factors and challenges in welding advanced
high strength steels and aluminum alloys. Dr Vijeesh Vijayan gave a glimpse of
the Welding research lab set up by him at NITTE and various research activities
going on as on date. Speaker also briefed about the industrial consultancy
projects taken up at his welding research lab.
As our proud alumni, Dr Vijeesh Vijayan interacted
with the students and shared sweet memories of his student life at SJEC during
2003-2007. He requested the students to attend the classes regularly and have
the strong foundation in subjects. Dr Vijeesh appreciated the infrastructure
and the growth the SJEC has shown in the last one decade.
SAE-SJEC team members have also interacted with
speaker to get the solution to their specific problems which they used to
encounter during the welding of ATV vehicles for BAJA competition. Dr Vijeesh
Vijayan invited all to visit his research lab at NMAMIT Nitte. SJEC wishes him
all the best in all his future endeavors.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering organised ALOHA 2018 - Farewell to the Class of 2018 on 15th May 2018, at 02:00 PM in Bishop Aloysius Paul Conference Hall. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC was the Chief Guest for the programme. Dr Sudheer M, Dean-Student Welfare and HOD of the Mechanical Engineering Department was the Guest of Honour, and Dr Raju K., Research Head, Mechanical Engineering at SJEC presided over the function. Mr. Pavana Kumara B, Assistant Professor in the Department convened the function. Mr Jokshith D’souza, Student of VI semester (ME) and Master of Ceremony, formally welcomed the gathering. Dr Shreeranga Bhat, Associate Professor, Mechanical Department raised the toast where he spoke many aspects which will help students to excel in their life. In reply to the toast, Mr Aman Magwin D’Souza from VIII semester M1 section, Ms Nileema Blanch Pereira from VIII semester M2, section and Mr Akash Rai from VIII semester M4 section, evinced their experiences at SJEC during the past four years.
Next, mementos were distributed to students of M1 and M2 section students by Dr Shreeranga Bhat and Dr Binu KG, Associate Professors of Mechanical Department.
Dr Sudheer M, Dean - Student Welfare and HOD of the Mechanical Engineering Department addressed the gathering. He advised students to be grateful to all the faculties who taught them in their entire engineering studies. He also gave a presentation related to eight rules which must be incorporated in life to be a successful person. He advised the students to take up responsibilities to create a better environment in our society.
This
was followed by distribution of mementos to students of M3 and M4 section by
Mr. Rudolf Dsouza and Mr. Sushanth Gowda, Assistant Professors of Mechanical
Engineering Department.
The President of the function Dr Raju K, delivered the presidential address, congratulated the students for completing their graduation, and wished them all the best for all their future endeavours.
After the presidential address, the office bearers and the association members of SAEINDIA SJEC Collegiate Club, ARC-SJEC, and Torque association received their certificates. The mementos to Turtle-3.0 were also presented during this occasion.
The
chief guest for the day, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, addressed the gathering where he
expressed his experiences teaching the outgoing batch and advised students not
to forget the teachers who taught them and also wished them good wishes.
In conclusion, Mr Pavana Kumara, Convener proposed the vote of thanks.
After
the formal program the refreshments were served, and the informal program
started at 3:45PM. Students of second and third year had organised various
games and activities where all the outgoing students actively took part. The
program ended at 5:00PM.
TORQUE
- Mechanical Engineering Students Association, along with TIME Institute of
Management, organised a career guidance talk on the topic Orientation on Aptitude & Career opportunities available after
Engineering for pre-final year students of Mechanical Engineering.
The
talks were held on 23 October 2017 at 12.00 PM to 1:00 PM in Spoorthi Hall,
Academic Block III and on 25 October 2017 at 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM in Bishop
Aloysius Paul Conference Hall, Academic Block-II.
The talk was delivered by Mr Ashith
Poojary, Manager - TIME Institute of Management. The speaker was introduced to
the crowd by Mr Pavana Kumara B, Coordinator of TORQUE.
The talk mainly focused on higher studies
and examinations that could be taken up by students in their final year.
The talk concluded with a Q and A
session, where the students were given an opportunity to clarify the doubts
regarding their future. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr Pavana Kumara B,
Coordinator of TORQUE.
SJEC organized Engineers’ Day Celebration on
27th September 2017. On this occasion various activities were conducted by Torque
- Students Association of Mechanical Engineering Department in showcasing the
technical skills of its students.

The time taken by the contestants to prepare both the model was noted. Among the contestants completing both the models in the given time without any errors, the individual with the shortest time was declared the winner. Among the contestants failing to complete both the models in time, the individual completing majority of the model with fewer errors won the event.

The Mechanical Engineering Department inaugurated the activities of its Students’ Association TORQUE for the academic year 2017-18 on Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 at 10:15 AM in Kalam Auditorium. Dr Savitha Pereira, Professor, MBA Department at SDM College of Business Management - Mangaluru was the Chief Guest of the programme. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal-SJEC presided over the function. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director - SJEC and Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director - SJEC was the Guests of Honour. Dr Sudheer M, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Mr Pavana Kumara B, Faculty Coordinator and Mr Pooesh M, Faculty Co-Coordinator of TORQUE, Mr Rajath Rao, President & Mr Allen Clinton, Vice-President of TORQUE, were present on the dais. Firstly, a brief presentation of the activities of Torque 2016-17 was presented.
Dr Sudheer M welcomed the gathering & introduced the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza florally welcomed the Chief Guest. Activities of TORQUE for 2017-18 was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp. Mr Allen Clinton, Vice-President of TORQUE, welcomed the second-year students to the function & gave an insight on various events conducted by the association & urged them to volunteer & participate in them. Toppers & class representatives from all sections of second year students were welcomed with gifts. The oath was administered to the association members and students by the Faculty Coordinator Mr Pavana Kumara B.
The Chief Guest for the day, Dr Savitha Pereira, in her speech, congratulated the students for being lucky to be a part of a good college which is having all necessary infrastructure and motivated students to make best use of it and study Engineering with a different viewpoint. She said that to make one’s life successful he need to have a goal. “A life without a goal is like a ship without a compass”, she quoted. She said that no matter how one had been in the last term, but what matters most today is how well one will utilize his/her capabilities and the facilities provided in the school in this term. She also added that specific goals in life enables us to move forward with determination, and this determination persuades us to strive hard. She advised the students to take up responsibilities to create a better environment in our society.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza addressed the gathering and advised students to take active participation in the association activities. He also said that as the name Torque means a force to keep moving, students should move forward in life to achieve greater heights. Rev. Fr Rohith D’Costa addressed the gathering & asked the students to take active participation in the association activities and understand the prime importance of studies & related activities, which will help them to excel in their career. He also advised students to look into the problems existing in the society and suggest technical solutions to those which is the prime responsibility of a Engineer. Dr Joseph Gonsalves, President of the function delivered the Presidential address. He motivated the students to participate in various activities conducted in the college and urged them to take up initiative to shape their ideas into realities.

proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by a Motivational talk by the Chief Guest on Time management, Stress Management and Relationship Management. Post
Lunch a series of events were held for the members of the Association.
The
Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an interaction with Mr John Rodrigues,
Mechanical Engineering-SJEC Alumnus from the Batch of 2016, who was recently
featured in the reputed New York Times – United States, for his innovative CoffeeBot
– a bot that delivers Coffee within office space and controlled via smartphone.
Mr Clarance, Alumnus from Electronics
and Communication Engineering of SJEC from the Class of 2016 also joined in the
interaction. The interaction was held on 8th August 2017 at Bishop
Aloysius Paul Hall. In a brief presentation, John spoke about his experiences
in developing the CoffeeBot and introduced the Collaborizm – a
kickstarter-esque website in New York that offers mentorship to innovators. Drawing
on his experiences of working on many innovative designs and product
developments over the past years, John motivated the students to pursue
innovation.
The
presentation was followed by an Q&A where John took on the queries from
students.
The Academic Project Exhibition
and Competition for the final year students of Mechanical Engineering Department,
organized under the banner TECHNOVA 2017, was held on the Friday, 26th
of May 2017. 50 projects in various streams were exhibited. The projects were divided into three separate
streams: Design and Fabrication, Thermal, and Material Science.
The projects were
evaluated by a panel of exteal and inteal judges from academia and
industry.

A Workshop on Non Destructive Testing was organized
by the Department of Mechanical Engineering under the banner of its Students
Association - TORQUE on Tuesday, 9th May 2017 in the Spoorthi Conference
Hall at 9:15 am. The workshop aimed at providing a platform for budding
professionals to enhance knowledge and practice of non-destructive testing technology.

S. Tahashildar, Sr. Quality Manager at V&G Industrial Testing Laboratory were
the Resource Persons.
Dr Sudheer M, HOD - Mechanical Engineering, welcomed
the resource persons. Mr Swaraj Lewis and Mr Pooesh M, TORQUE Coordinators
were the event organizers.
The first lecture was presented by Mr Ganesh
S. Tahashildar, who gave a technical session on the topic of Welding Defects
using NDT. The talk concluded with a Question and Answer sessions where the
students put out their queries on the topic. The second session of the day was
on the topic of NDT Methods, which was presented by Mr Girish Babu. The last session
was presented by Mr Naveen R, Assistant Professor in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering – SJEC on the subject matter of NDT in Process Plants.
This was followed by a vote of thanks by the Torque coordinator, Mr. Swaraj D
Lewis.
The afteoon session was an industrial visit
to V&G Industrial Testing Laboratory in Baikampady. The company
representatives conducted demonstration on several NDT techniques like
radiography, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle tests, dye penetration tests
etc.
The
Mechanical Engineering Department and its Students Association Torque celebrated
the Engineers’ Day on Tuesday, 27th September, 2016, at 11:00 am in
the Fr. Fred Memorial Hall. The guest of honor was Mr A V Harinath, Deputy
Chief Engineer at NMPT - Mangaluru.

to create a better environment in our society.

He also congratulated SAE SJEC club on their achievement. Dr Joseph Gonsalves, president of the function delivered the Presidential address. The Department of
Mechanical Engineering, in association with V&G Industrial Testing
Laboratory Pvt. Ltd, Baikampady – Mangaluru organized a one-day workshop on Non
Destructive Testing (NDT) on 12th April, 2016.
The workshop was
inaugurated by Mr Krishna Hegde,
General Manager – Technical Service at MRPL – Mangaluru, who graced the
occasion as Chief Guest. Mr Ganesh
S. Tahashildar, Quality Manager at V&G Industrial Testing Laboratory was
the key resource person for the workshop. The dignitaries were welcomed by the HOD
– Mechanical. The Chief Guest, Mr. Krishna Hegde and Mr. Ganesh S. Tahashildar,
addressed the gathering focusing on the importance and opportunities available
for the young engineers in the field of nondestructive testing. Rev. Fr Joseph
Lobo, Director addressed the gathering regarding nondestructive approaches in
life. The President of the ceremony, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis appreciated the
efforts of HOD and Staff of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for
providing a great leaing opportunity and practical exposure to various
methods employed in non-destructive testing technology. He also urged the
students of the Department to participant actively to such leaing opportunity
which bridges between theory and practical implementation.
Mr Hegde and Mr Tahashildar delivered lectures on the applications of
NDT techniques with relevance to various industries. The importance and
opportunities available for the young engineers in the field of nondestructive
testing was also highlighted. The technical sessions was followed by an
industrial visit to V&G Industrial Testing Laboratory to
facilitate hands-on experience of NDT techniques. The company representatives conducted demonstrations on various
NDT tools and techniques used by them in identifying defects.

Director – SJEC, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis Principal – SJEC, Dr Sudheer M HOD –
Mechanical, and Mr Swaraj Lewis – Coordinator of TORQUE, were the other
dignitaries present.
The Student Association of Mechanical Engineering Department, TORQUE, along with ISTE Student’s Chapter, celebrated Teachers Day on 5 September 2014, at 2:30 pm, in the Seminar Hall, Civil Engineering Block. A video on the life of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was presented.
It was also an occasion to felicitate senior faculty member from the Mechanical Engineering Department, Professor Ganapathi Bhat, who retired in June 2014.
Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, presided over the function and Rev Fr Ajith Menezes, Director in-charge, was the Guest of Honour. Dr Raju K, HOD, Mechanical Engineering, and Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat, Dean Quality Assurance, were also present on the dais.
The program began with a prayer led by Mr Denzil Tom and students from VII Sem.
Dr Raju K, welcomed the gathering after which, Dr Thirumaleshwar Bhat, introduced the Chief Guest, Professor Ganapathi Bhat, to the gathering and shared his experience of working with him as a colleague. Mr Joel Concesso addressed the gathering on behalf of the Alumni and Mr Shishir Aithal spoke on behalf of the students, about their experience with Professor Ganapathi Bhat.
In his speech, the Chief Guest urged the teachers to be committed and dedicated toward their duty of imparting knowledge to the students. He called upon students to take Dr S Radhakrishnan as their role model and urged them to use mode technology to enhance their leaing and experience of engineering. He also remembered Fr Valerian D’Souza, former Director, and Dr R K Yaji, former Principal, on this occasion.
Mr Shreeranga Bhat, Coordinator TORQUE, proposed the
Vote of Thanks. Ms Ramya, Assistant Professor, was the emcee. The function was
followed by games and other activities that were conducted by the students for
teaching and non-teaching staff.
The Mechanical Engineering Department organized a formal inauguration for the Students Association - TORQUE – on 28 August 2014, at 2:30 pm, in the College Auditorium, Academic Block II.
Dr Vijay H Desai, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, NITK Surathkal was the Chief Guest of the program. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, presided over the function. Rev Fr Ajith Menezes, Director in-charge, and Rev Fr Rohith D’Costa, Assistant Director, were the guests of honour. Dr Raju K, HOD, Mechanical Engineering; Mr Shreeranga Bhat, Coordinator TORQUE, and Mr Anil M Rego, Co-Coordinator TORQUE; were also present on the dais.
Mr Glen Rodrigues, President of TORQUE, welcomed the dignitaries. The inauguration began with the lighting of the lamp and the oath ceremony was conducted by Mr Shreeranga Bhat. Dr Raju K introduced the Chief Guest, Dr Vijay H Desai. In his speech, Dr Desai motivated the students to try and study engineering with a different perspective and shift from a teaching centric to leaing centric education system. He shed light on the various avenues which are at the disposal of a student on completing his graduation in Mechanical Engineering. He urged the students to take up higher studies and enter into the field of research. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis delivered the Presidential address. Rev Fr Ajith Menezes urged the students to take active part in the association activities. Mr. P. Varun Kajava, Vice President, TORQUE proposed the vote of thanks.
