The AICUF National Council organized a Training and Discussion Program for AICUF Unit Staff Animators at INDIAN SOCIAL INSTITUTE, Bengaluru, on 7 February 2026. Mr Joysun D’souza AICUF, SJEC Unit Staff Incharge participated in this program. The program began with a round of introductions, during which AICUF Staff Animators from various colleges were introduced to the AICUFers present.
Session 1: History of AICUF
The first session of the day, titled “History of AICUF,” was led by Fr. Dr. Selvin Raj. He explained the different stages in the growth of AICUF, beginning with its foundation by Fr. Carty, SJ, and traced how the movement evolved over the years. He strongly emphasized that AICUF is not merely an association, but a student movement, rooted in values, social awareness, and collective action.
Session 2: Constitution and the Role of AICUFers
After a tea break, the second session was conducted by Prof. Gladston on “Major Features of the Indian Constitution and the Role of AICUFers in Inculcating and Spreading Constitutional Values.” The session began with an overview of the history of the Indian Constitution and the amendments it has undergone. He highlighted that the Indian Constitution acts as a safeguard against chaos and injustice, and expressed concern that the basic structure of the Constitution is currently under threat. The session encouraged AICUFers to actively uphold and spread constitutional values.
Meeting with AICUF Karnataka State Advisor
Following Session 2, all AICUF Karnataka Staff Animators met with Rev. Fr. Merwyn, AICUF Karnataka State Advisor. During the meeting, animators were encouraged to focus more on zonal-level activities, especially those involving marginalized communities in their localities. He reminded the gathering that the Indian Constitution is our guiding scripture and reiterated that AICUF is meant for students of all religions, not limited to Catholic or Christian students. Rev. Fr. Merwyn also instructed each unit to conduct five different activities every year and expressed his interest in maintaining a compiled booklet documenting activities conducted by all AICUF units.
Session 3: Psycho–Socio–Spiritual Issues Faced by Youth
After lunch, Rev. Fr. Merwyn conducted a session on “Psycho–Socio and Spiritual Issues Faced by Youth and Ways to Cope with Them.” He explained the use of the term “evil spirit” not as a biblical reference, but as a way of describing negative forces or influences within students that can lead to harmful actions. An interactive exercise was conducted where staff and students reflected on situations of desolation and consolation, helping participants understand emotional and spiritual discernment.
Evening Discussion: Challenges Faced by Students
The evening tea break was followed by an open discussion among AICUF State Animators on “Three Major Challenges Faced by Students Today.” Participants identified artificial intelligence as both a helpful and harmful influence on Generation Z. Peer pressure and an inability or reluctance to face reality were also highlighted as major concerns. The day concluded with a meaningful discussion between animators and students, reflecting on these challenges and possible responses through AICUF initiatives.
The program proved to be enriching and reflective, strengthening the commitment of staff animators and students toward the vision and mission of AICUF.
