A session on ‘Sustainable Business’ as a part of SDG Lecture series

The Department of Business Administration in association with Young Indians (Yi) Mangalore Chapter organized an enlightening talk on “Sustainable Business”, delivered by Ms Alka Manoj. Founder-Li’l Ohana, Mangalore on 9th January 2025 for II MBA students. The primary aim of the session was to create awareness among participants about the importance of sustainability in modern business practices and to provide actionable insights for integrating sustainability into core business strategies.

Ms. Alka began by defining sustainable business as one that minimizes environmental impact, fosters social equity, and generates economic value. She emphasized the increasing global shift towards sustainability due to rising environmental concerns, consumer awareness, and regulatory pressures. Ms Alka Manoj also spoke on o sustainable fashion, emphasizing the urgent need for ethical practices in an industry heavily criticized for environmental degradation and exploitative labor. The session highlighted the rapid production cycles, low-cost labor, and disposable nature of fast fashion, which contribute to excessive textile waste, environmental pollution from dyes and synthetic materials and poor working conditions in manufacturing hubs.

The session covered key aspects of slow fashion, fast fashion, and the growing role of thrift stores in promoting sustainability. The speaker encouraged participants to explore thrift stores as an eco-friendly alternative to fast-fashion outlets. The talk was highly impactful, leaving the audience inspired and equipped with practical knowledge to incorporate sustainability into their professional endeavors. It emphasized the importance of collective efforts in building a sustainable future.
