About
My philosophy of engineering education is that all students are unique and must have an inspiring educational environment where they can grow intellectually, emotionally and socially. It is my wish to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential.
In my fifteen years of teaching experience, I found every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies not only in capabilities, but also in learning styles. My role as a teacher is to provide students the tools, with which to cultivate their own gardens of knowledge. To accomplish this goal, I will teach to the needs of each student so that all learners can feel capable and successful. Also, I will allow a student to become responsible member of the classroom by using strategies such as positive discipline. In showing a student how to become responsible for themselves and their own learning, I am giving them the tools to believe in themselves, to become successful in life and to love themselves.
I think personal interaction with my students is one of the most important aspects I need to improvise on. So I would like to have an individual interaction with my current course students (First year students) to make my teaching more effective and to achieve my goal. I believe that familiarity with a student is crucial for the development of a good rapport. So I make a great effort to know their names, interests and sometimes an unusual situations (sick mother, infant daughter). I make myself available outside the classroom by encouraging students to meet me during office hours, schedule one-on-one appointments whenever necessary in addition to office hours if students have conflicting schedules and use email extensively for communication. I have great respect for the individuality of each student and have a willingness to listen and answer any question.
I strive to maintain my classroom atmosphere favorable to learning. I allow students often work in groups in order to focus on communicative rather than a teacher-centered approach, thereby making room for individual expression. I use the audiovisual equipment, internet and other electronic resources to make the class interesting. I try to stick to the goals spelled out in my course plan, but I know to be flexible and to adapt my teaching whenever necessary. I am friendly, not frightening yet with appropriate boundaries. I learn every day that teaching is a learning experience and would like to learn more and more with experience which is my long term goal.
