As part of Engineer’s Week-2019 celebrations of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineer is (India)-Mangaluru Local Chapter and NIRMAN, Civil Engineering Student Association of St Joseph Engineering College, two technical talks on “Career Prospects for a Civil Engineer after Graduation” and :Tendering &Contracts Management” were organized on 23rd March 2019 at 10:00 am in Bishop Aloysius Paul Hall. Er K Anil Hegde, Consulting Structural Engineer, M/s Vimal Anil Associates, Mangaluru and Er. Arun Prabha, Head-Projects, M/s Tharaka Engineers Limited, Mangaluru, were the resource persons.
Er. Anil Hegde provided a deep insight to the various career opportunities for Civil Engineers after their Graduation. He emphasized on the importance of knowing the fundamentals of Civil Engineering and also the present day requirements/advantage of appearing for and clearing competitive examinations like GATE. He also advised the students to set a goal first and then work towards realizing the same. It is also better to have a career out of passion and not merely for the sake of someone else’s pressure. Er. Hegde was of the opinion that Civil Engineers should gain certain knowledge of a site or design office before starting up their own consultancy, and waed of failures if it is done so. He presented the audience with latest scenario of advancements in construction such as tall structures, iconic structures, and various other emerging Civil Engineering technologies like modular structure, flat slab, precast building and 3D printing of a structure. He wished that every student will become a good Civil Engineer and contribute positively to the Society and to the Nation.
Continuing in the series, Er.Arun Prabha delivered a talk on “Tenders &Contract Management”. He discussed various aspects of tendering and also the various departmental procedures to be undertaken for award of a tender. He opined that for being a successful tenderer, a very exhaustive site and material knowledge is very much essential. Er Arun Prabha quoted a few examples of the art of winning a tender and also about forward auctioning. As a concluding remark, he advised the audience that for excelling in career, the Civil Engineer should inculcate certain skillsets as required to the job in hand.
Later an interactive session with the resource persons was held and the programme concluded with a thanks giving to all responsible for successful conduction of these technical talks the programme was attended by all the faculty, staff and students of Civil Engineering Department.
