Workshop on Advanced Manufacturing Processes

St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, through its AICTE IDEA Lab, in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, organized a three-day workshop on Advanced Manufacturing Processes from 11th to 13th September 2025.

The workshop was specially designed for Diploma students of SNM Polytechnic, Moodbidri, and SNS Polytechnic, Bajpe, to provide hands-on exposure to modern manufacturing technologies. The initiative was in line with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) and AICTE’s vision to promote experiential learning and industry-ready skills among budding engineers.

The primary objectives of the workshop were:

• To introduce students to state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, CNC machining, PCB design, and laser cutting.
• To provide hands-on training on advanced tools and equipment available at the SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab.
• To encourage peer-to-peer learning and collaborative skill-building.
• To bridge the gap between theoretical learning in diploma education and practical industry practices.

The workshop witnessed active participation of diploma students from:

• SNM Polytechnic, Moodbidri- 42 students
• SNS Polytechnic, Bajpe- 35 students

Students were grouped into batches to ensure optimal hands-on experience with the equipment.

The workshop was conducted across three days, combining technical sessions, demonstrations, and practice.

Day 1: (11th September 2025)

• Welcome and Introduction to IDEA Lab – Overview of facilities and objectives (Faculty Incharge: Dr Vijay V S).
• Hands-on Training 
  
  • Batch-1: 3D Printer/Scanner (Trainer: Mr Deekshith)
  • Batch-2: CNC Wood Router (Trainer: Mr Praveen Dsouza)
• Post-lunch sessions: PCB Design & Laser Cutting with faculty mentoring.

Day 2: (12th September 2025)

• Batch rotations for CNC, 3D Printing, PCB Design, and Laser Cutting, enabling all students to gain exposure to each technology.
• Guidance and supervision by Mr Rajesh Belchada and Dr Vijay V S.

Day 3: (13th September 2025)

• Consolidation session on applications of advanced manufacturing processes.
• Group project demonstration where students showcased components designed during the workshop.
• Feedback session and valedictory, with reflections from participants and coordinators.

The workshop achieved the following outcomes:

• Students acquired practical exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies.
• Enhanced understanding of additive manufacturing methods.
• Development of teamwork and peer-learning skills through batch-based training.
• Improved confidence among diploma students to take up innovative projects using modern tools.

Conclusion

The three-day Workshop on Advanced Manufacturing Processes successfully fulfilled its objectives of promoting practical learning and skill development among diploma students. By engaging students directly with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, SJEC IDEA Lab has strengthened the bridge between polytechnic education and industry practices.

The coordinators acknowledged the active participation of students, the dedicated support of trainers, and the encouragement from the management of SJEC, which made this workshop a success.
