Objective of the Activity:-
The objective of the ecology programme SAMRAKSHA – ―Care for Our Common Home‖ was to create awareness among students about environmental protection, ecological responsibility, and sustainable living. The program aimed to sensitize young minds to present-day environmental challenges and encourage active participation in conservation efforts. It also sought to inspire students to take responsibility for nature and contribute towards a sustainable and greener future

Description of the Activity:-
AICUF Karnataka (Mangaluru Zone), in collaboration with St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, organized a Zonal-level Ecology Event titled SAMRAKSHA – ―Care for Our Common Home‖ on 9 January 2026. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students representing various colleges across the Mangaluru zone.
The inaugural ceremony commenced at 9:15 AM and was graced by Mr. Benedict Fernandes, Environmentalist and Secretary of Aranya Parisara & Havamana Badalavane Sangha, Mangaluru, as the Chief Guest. The program was presided over by Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis SJ, Vice Chancellor of St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru. The event was guided and supported by Fr. Merwyn Fernandes SJ, State Advisor, AICUF Karnataka, Ms. Melvita Leema, Faculty Organiser, and Ms. Salomi D’Souza, State President, AICUF Karnataka.
From St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor, a total of 17 students participated in the program under the guidance of Mr. Joysun D’Souza, Faculty Animator, AICUF SJEC Unit and KJES Youth Animators — Vinisha Dias, Sanjothomas V S, and Jeston D’Souza — actively attended and
contributed to the event, supporting group coordination, participant engagement, and the smooth conduct of the programme. . The SJEC students actively took part in the various group activities and discussions conducted throughout the day.
The participants were divided into nine thematic groups, each focusing on key ecological concerns such as Birds, Insects and Animals; Trees and Plants; Eco Interviews; Cleanliness Drive; Silent Walk; and Vermicomposting. These group-based activities provided hands-on exposure and helped participants gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues at the community level.

Conclusion:-
The SAMRAKSHA – Care for Our Common Home program was successfully conducted and proved to be an enriching and impactful experience for all participants. The event effectively raised awareness about ecological conservation and emphasized the vital role of youth in protecting the environment. Through interactive activities, reflection, and collective learning, participants developed a stronger sense of responsibility towards nature.
