  • Hands-on workshop on “Feature Craft: Turning Raw Data into Powerful Insights”
The Department of Intelligent Computing and Business Systems (ICBS), in collaboration with NEXUS – The Student Association Club, hosted a hands-on workshop titled “Feature Craft: Turning Raw Data into Powerful Insights” on 25th October 2025 for 5th semester Computer Science and Data Science students. Led by Ms. Teena A James, Assistant Professor at SJEC, Mangaluru, the session aimed to equip students with practical skills in data wrangling — a foundational step in data analytics. Ms. James introduced key stages of the wrangling process including Data Discovery, Structuring, Cleaning, Enrichment, and Validation, using real-world examples to demonstrate how raw data can be transformed into actionable insights.

The workshop featured a two-hour interactive session in Google Colab, where 52 students engaged in coding exercises using Python libraries such as Pandas and NumPy. Tasks included importing datasets, handling missing values, reshaping and merging data, and validating outputs. Feedback highlighted the clarity and engagement of the instruction, with students reporting increased confidence in data preprocessing. The session concluded with a discussion on the importance of systematic data preparation in analytics, and many participants expressed interest in future workshops on feature engineering, pipeline automation, and data visualization.
