Day 1 and 2

3-Dimensional Analysis of Structures using ETABS

This workshop is mainly designed for final-year students as they must be equipped with Industry oriented software for the analysis and design of 3 dimensional structures.

On the first day, i.e. on 29 th May 2023, the first session HOD inaugurated the session by initiating the software and briefed about the importance of leaing new software applications and up gradation of skill to every civil engineer.

Later Ms Pranamya K started the session by teaching basic commands of modelling in ETABS software. Then she also taught to define materials, and different types of sections and assign the same to the model. In the afteoon session concentrated mainly on different types of codes to be referred for different types of loads and their application in ETABS.

In the second day session, modelling of real-time project was given to students as an assignment and assistance were given to resolve real-time issues in modeling real-time projects. Students could be able to do 3d models for the real-time project and apply the loads as per Indian standard codes. After analysis students also leat about load combinations and designing of members in ETABS

Day 3

Advance Science and Technology in Microbiology Lab.

1. Students were taught to use the Compound Microscope.

2. They were taught to prepare the Agarose Gel Mixture used as a growth medium for the microbes

3. They were taught to sanitize themselves and use a Vertical Laminar Airflow chamber.

4. Sanitizing and preparing the petri dishes and other material required for the microbiological experiments.

5. Various methods of streaks and their usage in the growth of microbes.

4. Preparation of temporary slides

5. Gram's staining procedure and uses.

6. Identification of microbes using the colony morphology and under the microscope.

 Reinforced Concrete Corrosion Testing

The corrosion workshop on May 31, 2023, is designed to provide final year civil engineering students with the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with corrosion-related issues in structures. Corrosion is a significant conce in the construction industry as it can weaken the integrity of structures over time. Therefore, it is essential for aspiring civil engineers to be equipped with the knowledge of corrosion prevention and mitigation techniques.

The session starts with an introduction to the concept of corrosion, its types, and its impact on different construction materials. The instructor or expert can emphasize the importance of understanding corrosion and its implications on structural performance and safety.

Following the introduction, the workshop cover the following topics:

Corrosion Fundamentals: Explanation of electrochemical principles involved in corrosion, factors affecting corrosion rate, and corrosion mechanisms for different materials like steel, concrete, and other metals used in construction.

Corrosion Prevention: Techniques for preventing corrosion, including the use of protective coatings, corrosion-resistant materials, cathodic protection, and proper design practices to minimize exposure to corrosive environments.

Inspection and Monitoring: Introduction to various inspection and monitoring methods to identify early signs of corrosion and assess their extent, such as visual inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT), and corrosion rate measurements.

Corrosion in Concrete Structures: Specific focus on corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, commonly known as concrete corrosion. Discuss the causes, detection, and repair methods for corroded reinforced concrete elements.

Corrosion Mitigation and Repair Techniques: Overview of methods to repair and rehabilitate structures affected by corrosion, including reinforcing steel replacement, patching, and applying corrosion inhibitors.

Environmental Considerations: Understanding the impact of the environment on corrosion and how design considerations can influence the vulnerability of structures to corrosion.

Practical Exercises: Hands-on exercises and demonstrations of corrosion prevention techniques, such as applying coatings and cathodic protection, can provide students with valuable experience.

Q&A Session: An interactive question-and-answer session to address any doubts or queries students may have about corrosion-related topics.

Throughout the workshop, emphasis should be placed on the importance of implementing proactive measures to prevent corrosion and ensure the long-term durability and safety of structures.

By the end of the corrosion workshop, students should have a solid understanding of corrosion principles, preventive measures, and repair techniques, making them better equipped to tackle corrosion challenges in their future careers as civil engineers.
