On 6th April 2023, an industrial visit was conducted to the Varahi underground power house, situated in Hosangadi, Udupi. The visit was organized for second-year engineering students by two faculty members, Mr. Rohith Prakash Veigas and Ms. Vishikha Keshava. The Varahi underground power house is one of the most impressive hydroelectric power stations in India, generating a total power capacity of 240 MW. The power house is located inside a mountain, and its unique design and architecture have made it a popular destination for industrial visits. The visit began with a brief introduction by the power house officials about the history, construction, and functioning of the power station. The officials then took the students and faculty members on a guided tour of the entire power house. The tour covered various sections of the power house, including the underground powerhouse, transformer hall, control room, and switchyard. The students were able to witness the entire process of power generation, from the water intake to the generation of electricity. They also leaed about the various types of turbines used in the power house, and how they are operated and maintained. The officials explained the safety measures that are taken to ensure the safety of the workers and the power station. The visit provided an excellent opportunity for the students to lea about the practical aspects of their field of study. They were able to observe the operation of various equipment, and also interacted with the officials to clarify their doubts and queries. Overall, the industrial visit to the Varahi underground power house was a great success. The students gained valuable insights into the working of a hydroelectric power station, which will be useful for their future studies and career. The visit was informative, educational, and inspiring, and we are grateful to the power house officials for their hospitality and cooperation.
