On October 24, 2024, second-year Civil Engineering students, accompanied by their faculty member Dr. Prakash K. G., embarked on an enriching educational journey to Nirmithi Kendra in Surathkal. The primary objective of the visit was to explore cost-effective construction techniques and the integration of precast elements, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. Renowned for its innovative and sustainable building practices, Nirmithi Kendra provided the perfect environment for hands-on learning.
During the visit, students participated in live demonstrations, gaining practical experience with alternative construction methods such as stabilized mud blocks and compressed stabilized earth blocks. Case studies highlighted the real-world success and viability of these techniques in addressing construction challenges. Students also gained valuable insights into the fabrication of precast components and their role in expediting construction processes, demonstrating their potential to revolutionize traditional building practices.
Interactions with industry professionals offered further perspectives on harnessing local resources and fostering innovation to tackle critical housing issues while promoting environmental sustainability. This immersive experience not only expanded the students' knowledge but also ignited a passion for eco-friendly construction, inspiring them to become future leaders in sustainable Civil Engineering.
