A workshop on block chain technology was organized by CIPHER, A student association of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering for the students of VI Semester on 23rd February 2019 from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm at Bishop Aloysius Hall, followed by CSE webinar Hall. Mr. Marimuthu C, Research Scholar, Department of CSE, NITK, Surathkal was the resource person.
Initially, a pre-assessment was done to just gauge the knowledge of students on Block Chain Technology. Then, the session began with an introduction on the basic ideology of block chain technology. The resource person highlighted the cutting edge technology by giving some real world examples.
Through analogy, different use cases, he explained the wide applications of blockchain which includes energy sector, supply chain management, e-voting, real estates, data storage etc.
The speaker also told about the various end users and terminologies used in block chain. Mr Marimuthu also made awareness on overall adoption rate of block chain technology. Furthermore, he made it an interactive session discussing the merits and demerits of the block chain process. The group dispersed for lunch at 1 pm.
The workshop resumed at 2 PM. The post session was hands-on. In this afteoon session, the presenter told about ethereum which is a blockchain based application.
The participants were instructed to install ethereum and configured it according to the directions given by the speaker. He also told about the various commands used in establishing the connection and data mining. The students worked in pairs and performed data mining by sharing their IDs. As a parting advice, the resource person mentioned that one should update their technical skills by attending such workshops. The workshop concluded at 4:30 pm by felicitating the resource person with a memento by the staff coordinator, and Ms Jahnavi Hehar delivering the vote of thanks.
