On 13 April 2023, a survey on "Installation of Solar System” was conducted by the final year and pre-final year students of Dept. Of Electrical & Electronics Engineering in association with Community Engagement Group, SJEC at Malluru village, Mangaluru. The survey was conducted with the aim of identifying the type of energy consumption, appliances used in the houses and educate them on the benefits of using Solar appliances. Around 9.20 am, we departed from the college and reached the village at 9.45 am. Total 91 Students from Dept. of EEE were present for this activity. These students were divided into 18 groups and survey form was given to them. Students visited around 60 houses in the village and enquired about grid connection, facilities available in the house and type of tariffs. Students actively participated in this survey and gave awareness to several villagers about the necessity for installing solar appliances. It gave an opportunity for students to develop their communication skills and sensitize them on the electricity issues faced by the rural people.
Our survey found that all the houses in Malluru village were connected to the electrical grid. However, there is a lot of scope for using solar appliances as many houses have not installed PV panels. For example: there are household using sewing machines which can be connected to solar system to save energy. Ms Madhavi Gatty, Ms Divya K Pai , Mr Joysun Dsouza , Assistant Professors, Dept. Of EEE and Ms Anusha S, Assistant Professor, Dept. Of CSE were the faculty in charge for this activity. Mr Anson Feandes , Department of ME was the student coordinator of the community group activity. Thanks to the management, faculty and students for the support.
