Workshop on Patents and Prior Art Search Empowers SJEC Faculty

The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at SJEC organized a workshop entitled "Patents: Prior Art Search" exclusively designed for the faculty members of the institution on the 9th of October, 2023, at the Digital Signal Processing Lab of the ECE department. This workshop was open to all faculty members at SJEC, and it attracted the active participation of 28 dedicated educators and researchers. Leading the session was Dr. Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal and Dean of Research and Development at SJEC.

The primary objective of this workshop was to equip faculty members with valuable insights into conducting prior art searches and, in tu, identifying the novelty in their projects-an essential skill for academic and research pursuits. Dr. Purushothama Chippar initiated the session by delivering an in-depth exploration of patentability criteria, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal factors that determine whether an invention or innovation qualifies for patent protection. He also underscored the significance of prior art searching, provided clarity on patent classification, and guided the faculty through the essential steps for effective search processes. Dr. Chippar went a step further by providing hands-on experience in patent searches and shared best practices for conducting searches across various databases. Dr Dayakshini, Head of the Dept of ECE thanked Dr Chippar for the enriching workshop. Ms. Deepthi S. R and Mr. Glenson Toney, Assistant Professors, Dept of ECE coordinated the workshop.

This workshop proved to be a highly beneficial and empowering experience for the faculty members of SJEC, fostering their ability to perform robust prior art searches and evaluate the novelty of their projects, thus contributing to their academic and research excellence.
