Hands-on Session on the topic "Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Patent Searching Techniques"

The Department of MCA, in association with TechnoCrats, organized a Hands-on Session on the topic “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Patent Searching Techniques” on Saturday, 11th October 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at MCA Lab 3, Academic Block – I.

The session was specifically organized for III Semester MCA students, and Dr. Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal, SJEC Mangaluru, served as the resource person for the event.

The session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), their importance, and the methods of protection. It also emphasized the significance of Patent Searching Techniques (PST) in identifying and safeguarding innovative ideas. The session began with an insightful overview of IPR and covered various aspects such as Patents, Patent Rights, Trademarks, Industrial Design, and Geographical Indications.

Dr. Chippar further explained the rationale behind IPR protection, noting that these are monopoly rights that generally require periodic renewal, except in the cases of copyrights and trade secrets.

Overall, the hands-on session enhanced students’ awareness of the IPR framework and equipped them with practical knowledge of patent search methodologies, which are crucial for innovation and research.
