  • Five Days National Level FREE Online Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Academic Writing”

 

A National Level Five-Days FREE Online Faculty Development Program (FDP) on " Academic Writing " was successfully conducted from 04 April 2022 to 08 April 2022 . The FDP was conducted by the Office of Dean (R&D) in association with the Research and Facilities Group and Department of Mechanical Engineering. There were about 380 registrations for the FDP and 225 participants have attended the virtual FDP and received the participation certificate. The certified participants were from about 60 different institutions (other than SJEC) and among them, about 10 institutions were from outside Kaataka.

Inauguration: The FDP was virtually inaugurated with Dr Ajay Semalty H.N.B. Garhwal University , Uttarakhand as Chief Guest, Dr Rio D'Souza and Rev Fr Alwyn D'Souza as Guest of Honours, Rev Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza as President in the presence of Dean R&D Dr Sudheer M, HOD-ME Dr Purushothama Chippar, Convener Dr Harivinod and the FDP participants.

Sessions Day 1:

Dr Ajay Semalty from H.N.B. Garhwal University , Uttarakhand spoke on topic " Academic Writing ". Professor highlighted on Nine Characters of Guru, Basic Traits of Academic Writing, Leaing Academic Writing, Focus on Quality not Quantity, Importance of English, Plagiarism, Major Types of Academic Writing, Basic Rules Focusing Every Component of the Article etc.

Dr Arun M Isloor from NITK Surathkal gave virtual presentation on " Ethics in Research " and enlightened participants on Ethics Principles, Research Integrity, Code of Practice, Retraction watch, Data Fabrication, Research Misconduct, Plagiarism etc.

Sessions Day 2:

Mr Akshay Prasanna from Tuitin, Bengaluru spoke on " Academic Integrity, Plagiarism and Best Practises " covering the topics such as Plagiarism and Text Similarity, Factors Affecting Similarity, Utilizing Tuitin as a Formative Tool etc.

Dr Rajasekharan Pillai K, MIM-MAHE Manipal presented on the topic " Literature Review " covering the different related topics such as What is not a Literature Review, Purpose of Literature Review, Critical Questions and Conces, Coopers Taxonomy, Steps to Conduct Literature Review, Literature Map, Common Mistakes, Quality Check etc.

Sessions Day 3:

Dr P. Pal Pandian, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru gave a very detailed presentation on " Writing Review Papers " covering the topics such as Why/What/Where to publish, Importance of Language, Structure of the Review Paper, Abstract, Methods and Materials, Discussions, Conclusion etc.

Dr Anitha D, Thyagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai presented on topic "Research Article Writing" covering the different topics such as  Initial Steps, Deciding on the Completeness of the Work, Drafting the Title, Abstract, Construction of the Results, Writing the Main Body of the Article, Writing Introduction, Literature Review, Methods and Materials, Writing Discussion, Conclusion, References, Joual Selection etc.

Sessions Day 4:

Dr Ligy Philip, IIT Chennai spoke on " Research Proposal Writing " and enlightened the FDP participants on various topics such as What is a research proposal? Structure of Proposal, Essential Ingredients, Identify the Funding Agency, Identify the Area of Research, Criteria Used for Selection, Questions and Answers on Research Proposal Preparation, How to Write Each Components of the Research Proposal for Funding with Example, Common Mistakes, Building Team, Budget, Do's and Don't's etc.

Dr. Paresh Tanna, R K university, Gujarath gave presentation on the title "Thesis Writing" and covered the related contents like What is Thesis? When to start?  Components of Thesis, Explanation of Writing each Components of Thesis with Examples.

Sessions Day 5:

Dr Shivaram B S, NAL Bengaluru gave interesting lecture on "Understanding Publication Metrics & Ethics" briefing on different topics such as Importance of the Academic Metrics, Data Points of the Scholarly Publications, Sources of Publication Metrics, Understanding Publication Metrics: Joual, Article, Author / Researcher / Institution, Publication Ethics etc.

Dr Anil Kumar Agarwal, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi gave presentation on "Framing the Research Problem" and covered topics such as , What is a Problem? Right Research Problem, Judging the Strength, Literature Review, Research Questions, Types of Research Etc.

A very good feedback and appreciation about the FDP was obtained from the participants and the FDP has served its purpose.
