IIEDC: Technical Talk on “Industrial scenario in DK & significance of factory act for an industrial set up”

 

A technical talk on “Industrial scenario in DK & significance of factory act for an industrial set up” was organized on 16 th November 2018 in Fr Fred Memorial Hall, for the third year students of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department. The talk was an activity supporting the course Management & Entrepreneurship, and was held in association with IIEDC. Mr K.G. Nanjappa, Deputy Director of Factories, Bangaluru was the resource person.

Ms Shrunga K.G, student of third year welcomed and introduced speaker to the audience. Ms. Vijayalaxmi H.M., Assistant Professor, florally welcomed the speaker.

The resource person started with the introduction to the industrial scenario in Kaataka as well as Dakshina Kannada district. Statistics were provided regarding the number of registered factories, the number of hazardous factories, Major Accident Hazard Units(MAHs) and the total number of registers boilers in the state .This was followed by a brief explanation on the inventory of different hazardous substances and their quantity stored in the state as well as the threat they possess. A few examples were given for different hazards like LPG and chemical plants such as MRPL and MCF.

An explanation on how an industry is set up was given. He stated that the key aspect of any venture begins with an idea, followed by knowing the market, that is to understand the customer, his needs etc. This is followed by the action plan which covers topics like location, nature of the business, facilities, planning, resources like manpower and raw materials. The concept of material handling, quality control and resource management in industries was introduced to the students.

One of the key aspects to be taken care in an industry, that is safety, was elaborated upon. The definition of hazard and safe working environment was explained.  Two laws formed by the govement for the purpose of industrial safety were explained to the audience. The resource person explained the two acts, first one being The Factories Act-1948 and the second one being Kaataka Factories Rules-1969. The definition of worker and manufacturing process, guidelines for health, housekeeping, fire and life safety, elevators, isolated storage, ventilation, and temperature was briefed. The presenter concluded the talk by showing a video of a real tragedy that took place, in India. This was followed by a brief Q&A session.

The topics explained were presented in a well-organized manner and a sufficient number of figures were shown alongside the text. Overall it was very useful to the audience.
