The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in association with the Discipline and Equity group conducted a talk on 22nd July 2024 pertaining to “An awareness session on health and personal hygiene”. The resource person Dr Prerana Rao, associated with A J hospital based out in Mangaluru, delivered the session for the students and staff of SJEC at Prerana hall from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  Mrs Vijayalaxmi H Manjunatha, Assistant professor, ECE Dept. Introduced the resource person to the audience, Dr Dayakshini, HOD of ECE dept. florally welcomed the guest. SJEC 65 students and  Department faculty members, Discipline and Equity group members, HOD’s including the admission staff, total 35 members attended the talk.

Dr Prerana Rao provided informative awareness on the importance of being physically fit and healthy and shared a few tips on the same. The session also focused on the awareness of oral and skin hygiene with tips provided on the need for regular hand washing, shaving and grooming for men, hair care and menstruation.

Participants were made aware with the symptoms of breast cancer and regular monitoring of the same as a self-diagnosis. Cervical cancer and vaccinations associated with it was also discussed by Dr Prerana Rao.

The session was a comprehensive package of knowledge covering the aspects like the right nutrition for being healthy, importance of walking and exercise at least 20 minutes a day, role of gratitude and laughter, sex education and symptoms of sexually transmitted disease and prevention, consequences of substance abuse and ergonomics pertaining to computer usage.

Dr Prerana Rao concluded the talk by providing awareness on the basic life support to be used at times of emergency like cardiac arrest, seizure and brain haemorrhage and shared certain guidelines to be followed as a first aid to save the patient’s life.
