On October 23, 2024, the AICUF, SJEC Unit under CCG in association with Dept. of EEE, SJEC organized a visit to De Mercedes Orphanage in Derlakatte. The main aim of the visit was to engage with the orphanage inmates through various activities, fostering a spirit of care and companionship. The agenda was well-structured, ensuring a balance of informative and entertaining segments for the inmates. The program commenced at 9:15am with participants assembling near the college chapel for attendance. By 9:30am, the group departed for the orphanage.
Upon arrival at the orphanage, there was an introductory session, where Mr Joysun Dsouza, the faculty coordinator of AICUF, gave a brief talk on "AICUF and its objectives". This was followed by an ice-breaker session, conducted by the AICUFERs, which composed of fun-filled action songs for the kids.
The inmates were then divided into batches and separate activities were conducted for each batch. This included games targeting team-spirit, talk on Hygiene and Well-being and presentation of talents by the inmates. At the end of group activities, refreshments were provided for all.
At 12:00 pm, everyone gathered in the common hall to enjoy an action song and dance performance by the AICUFERs, creating a lively atmosphere filled with music and joy. The event concluded with a valedictory program at 12:30 pm, where words of appreciation were shared, prizes to the winners of various activities were distributed and the participants bid farewell to the inmates. The group departed the orphanage at 12:45 pm and returned to SJEC, arriving back on campus at 1:30 pm.
The visit was a success, achieving its purpose of engaging with the inmates through meaningful interactions and entertainment, thus strengthening the bond between AICUF members and the orphanage community. Ms. Chaitra Shetty, Assistant Professor; Mr. Melwyn Miranda, Technical Staff , Dept. of EEE, SJEC accompanied students during this visit. In preparation for this event, AICUF SJEC organized a Community Support Donation Drive as part of their Old Age Home visit program. This drive, held from October 4 to October 19, encouraged AICUF members to save Rs. 5 daily, totaling Rs. 80 per participant, which went towards the donation for the orphanage. Through mindful savings, participants contributed towards supporting the initiative, and additional contributions were also welcomed. The funds collected through this drive played a vital role in providing for the refreshments and activities organized for the inmates, enriching the overall experience of the orphanage visit.
