I.S.T.E SJEC Students Chapter organized a Guest Technical Talk on “Human Computer Interaction and Cognition” by Prof. K.P. Rao , who is a recipient of the NADOJA (Teacher of the State) AWARD and the prestigious KARNATAKA RAJYOTSAVA AWARD and he is also a former Professor in IIT Guwahati and former Scientist from B.A.R.C, Mumbai, he is also an Innovator, Computer Scientist, Computer Script Researcher, Language Expert, Printing Expert and Mathematician. This talk was held on 30th March 2015 at Bishop Aloysius Paul Conference Hall, Civil Engineering Block from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. This talk was open for the interested U.G and P.G students of all the Branches of Engineering.

Mr. Noel Deepak Shiri, ISTE SJEC Chapter Chairman and the convener of the program, welcomed the gathering. Our Principal Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis welcomed the Chief Guest Prof. K.P Rao with a Bouquet of flowers. Dr. Thirumaleshwara Bhat, Dean-QA, introduced Prof. K.P Rao to the gathering. Director Incharge Rev. Father Ajith Menezes gave the Presidential Address.

Prof. K.P Rao began his talk by stressing on leaing as a life long process and requested students and staff to always be thirsty for leaing and acquiring new information and to be updated with the new technology. He even said that the use of Inteet which is a “Gateway or Highway to Knowledge” should be effectively utilized for Teaching and Leaing process by both teachers and students. Further in his talk he elaborated about Human Computer Interaction and Cognition, he also discussed on Human-Machine interaction and its historical significance starting with the development of Automata or Automaton which is a self-operating machine which is programmed to do a certain specific task and its development over the years which has led to the tremendous improvements in mode day computer. Prof. Rao discussed about human beings from the cognitive point of view, and the Short term and Long Term Memory in Humans and the attitude and view of humans towards machine and computers. He gave the main differences between Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, and enlightened the process of making Computer closer to humans by telling the development story of Computer Mouse by Doug Engelbart (Inventor of Computer Mouse). Further in the talk he discussed about his friend Prof. Marvin Minsky (Cognitive Scientist in the field of Artificial Intelligence from MIT, USA) who started pioneering research in Machine Leaing and Computer Vision.  He highlighted the use of computer software and its development in the engineering field, he also stressed on the future of human interaction with computer with an examples of Google Glass. For this technical talk about 240 students along with staff members from all the Engineering branches took part in this session. All in all, the guest technical talk was extremely well received by the audience and appreciated by the college management.

After the talk, our Principal Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis honored Prof. K.P Rao with a Shawl, Garland and presented a memento and a gift to the speaker on behalf of the management, staff and students of SJEC.

All the various ISTE Department staff Coordinators were present for the talk. Mr. Orville Sutari, ISTE Mechanical Department Staff Coordinator proposed the vote of thanks and Mr. Ankith K.R and Mr. Joswin, student Coordinators from Mechanical Department were the emcee.
