The Department of Civil Engineering organized a one-day industrial visit to Water Treatment Plan, Intake Structure and Vent Dam at Tumbe and Sewage Treatment Plant at Kavoor, Mangaluru on 3 November 2017 for VII Semester students. Three faculty members Mr. Vinod T D’Souza, Mr. Prashant Kurdekar and Ms. Apoorva K V accompanied a group of 58 students. The main objective of the visit was to provide exposure to students on the intake structure (jack well), onsite water treatment process, and make them aware about various wastewater treatment processes in the municipal treatment plant. In Water Treatment Plant, students observed the different water treatment processes such as Aeration, Flocculation, Sedimentation, Filtration and Disinfection process. Students also visited to the Laboratory where they could notice various laboratory equipment and the onsite procedure for water quality analysis.
Next visit was to the vent dam and Intake structure at Tumbe, where the students could observe the jack well (i.e. intake structure) situated at Tumbe which withdraws the water from the source i.e. river Netravati and supplies it to the water treatment plant. The students observed the vent dam, intake structure and pumping station, where they saw the pumps of 30HP and above which could lift the water and supply the water of about 80 MLD. Er. Sudarshan (Plant Incharge) explained the students regarding the specification, design and other details of the plant. The exposure to Industrial practices was an invaluable source of information as well as practical experience for the students.
Final visit was to the Sewage Treatment Plant situated at Mullakad, Kavoor in a 4 acres area, which is designed and constructed by L&T constructions. The capacity of the treatment plant is 43.5 MLD (million liters per day) and consists of 9 pumping station in the Mangaluru vicinity from where the sewage is pumped to the treatment plant. The total sewage produced by the city is around 22 to 23 MLD. The treatment plant follows preliminary treatment method, primary treatment method and secondary treatment methods for treating the municipal wastewater.
Mr Adarsh (Plant Manager) explained the students regarding the locations and specification of different treatment processes in the treatment plant. The different treatment processes carried out in the treatment plant were screening, grit removal using grit chamber, biological process like UASBR, aeration process, primary sedimentation, sludge thickening, sludge digestion and sludge drying beds. Mr. Adarsh (Plant Manager) showed and explained about every activity happening in the treatment like screening process, aeration process, and sludge handling process etc. He also answered the queries of the students regarding the different treatment processes. The Industrial visit to Sewage treatment plant was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure of treatment process, which can help them in their academics and future career enhancement.
