The Department of Intelligent Computing and Business Systems (ICBS), SJEC Mangaluru, successfully conducted a workshop titled “LaTeX for Academic Writing: From Project Reports to Publications” The session was organized for students of 6th sem AIML/CSE(DS)/CSBS on 11-02-2026(Wednesday) and 13-02-2026(Friday) in association with NEXUS, the Student Association club, to equip them with essential skills required for preparing major project reports, technical documentation, and research papers. Dr. Harivinod N., Professor & HOD, Dept. of ICBS and Dr. Saleena T.S, Assistant Professor Grade II, Dept. of ICBS were the resource persons for the program. Dr Saleena. T.S, Ms. Farha Anjum, Ms. Devi Krishna were the faculty coordinators from the department.
During the session, students were introduced to TeX and LaTeX and their importance in academic writing. The resource persons explained how LaTeX helps in organizing documents systematically using sections and chapters, and demonstrated how to include images and tables neatly in reports. Students were also guided on how to properly label figures so that they can be referred to easily within the document. The overall focus was on helping students understand how to prepare well-structured and professional-looking project reports.
The workshop also covered the importance of proper referencing and citation practices while writing technical documents. Students were given an overview of how references can be managed efficiently using BibTeX. Basic aspects such as handling special symbols, controlling the placement of figures, and maintaining regular backups of their work were discussed to avoid common errors and data loss. The session was interactive and beneficial, providing students with practical insights that will support them in their major project work and future research activities.
The session received an encouraging response from the participants, and active involvement was observed throughout the program. The class representatives of each participating class volunteered and played a supportive role in coordinating the session, ensuring smooth organization and student participation. Overall, the workshop was a productive initiative that will significantly assist students in preparing high-quality project reports and pursuing future academic publications.
