From July 8th to July 10th, 2024, second-year Civil Engineering students visited KRS, KERS, and Bhavani Sagar Dam along with Dr. Prakash K. G & Dr. Nishitha D Souza. This trip provided practical exposure, helping students bridge the gap between theory and real-world applications. It enhanced their understanding of complex concepts, industry practices, and safety standards while promoting skills like communication and teamwork.
Visit to KERS
On July 8, students explored the Karnataka Engineering Research Station (KERS), one of India's oldest research organizations. They learned about various research fields, including Irrigation Structures and Coastal Engineering, and observed dam model studies. KERS also trains in-service engineers and offers project guidance to engineering students.
Krishna Raja Sagara Dam (KRS)
Students visited KRS, constructed from 1911 to 1931, which serves as a crucial water source for Mysore and Bengaluru. They learned about its unique design, including 48 automatic gates instead of traditional spillways, facilitating efficient water management.
Bhavani Sagar Dam
On July 9, students visited Bhavani Sagar Dam, one of the world’s largest earthen dams, crucial for irrigation and flood control. Completed in the 1950s, it features two hydroelectric power stations and extensive water distribution networks.
The visit provided invaluable insights into civil engineering advancements and the importance of sustainable infrastructure. It prepared students for industry challenges and highlighted the role of engineering in regional development.
