The Department of Civil Engineering, in association with the ISTE Student Chapter, visited the Cashew Processing Unit in Puutur, D.K., on July 19, 2024. The purpose of the visit was to raise awareness among engineering students about the importance of traditional farming systems followed in India and how these can be mechanized to improve farmers' income. The visit also highlighted how individuals can become entrepreneurs in the agricultural industry, even without prior experience in the field.
Two sessions were organized by the Institute: the first introduced the path through which the cashew processing industry has grown to its current stage, while the second focused on modern machinery used in agriculture, including drone technology for spraying techniques.
The first session was delivered by Dr. Subrahmanian, a senior scientist, who spoke proudly about the country's agricultural developments over the years, particularly concerning the cashew crop. He provided deep insights into cashew processing, including a demonstration in the research laboratory.
The second session was led by Dr. Manjunath, another eminent scientist from the same office. He discussed the machinery used for various crops and emphasized the advantages of drone technology, which can save time and resources while delivering efficient results.
Overall, it was a valuable experience for the students of SJEC, boosting their confidence in transferring knowledge to others through outreach programs.
