The Department of Civil Engineering in association with IEI Chapter organized an industrial visit to Thumbe Dam and the Thumbe Water Treatment Plant on 12 March 2026 for sixth semester students. A total of 37 students participated in the visit.
The visit aimed to provide practical exposure to components of urban water supply systems, including water storage, treatment, and distribution. At Thumbe Dam, students observed the reservoir structure and understood its role in supplying raw water to Mangaluru city.
At the water treatment plant, technical staff explained the treatment process, covering coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Students examined the operation of treatment units, monitoring systems, and quality control measures adopted to ensure safe drinking water standards.
The visit enabled students to relate theoretical concepts to actual engineering practice. Interactions with plant personnel provided clarity on process design, operational challenges, and maintenance practices.
The industrial visit strengthened students’ understanding of water treatment systems and urban water supply infrastructure.
