  • Technical talk on “E-Waste Management”

A technical talk on E-Waste Management’ was hosted from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm for second-year engineering students of Civil and ICBS at Prerana Hall. Ms. Shamitha welcomed the resource person Mr. Vinayaka Bhatta. The floral welcome was done by Dr. Nishitha.  Later, the resource person addressed the significance of the topic, “E-waste” as the fastest growing waste stream in India with 3.2 million tonnes generated a year, third highest after China and USA (According to ‘Global E-waste Monitor 2020’).

He also added, that fast-growing ICT sector is one of the prominent contributors to this increasing number of E-waste. Upgradation and faster obsolescence of electronic products make consumers discard their products quickly, which in turn accumulate huge E-waste in the solid waste stream. Moreover, the challenge is the recycling of e-waste handled by the informal sector. Further, he said, the methods we are practicing for recycling are primitive and hazardous, adding to the problem of climate change and pollution in India. These prevailing challenges make the E-waste sector a major focal point for both government and industry.as one of the most rapidly growing waste streams in municipal solid waste all over the world.

In the last part of the session, the resource person shared how best we can adopt some of the strategies to cut down the excess usage of E-waste. Finally, the session was concluded with the facilitation of the resource person by the faculty coordinators Dr. Nishitha and Ms. Shruthi Vishwajith.
