The Research and Innovation Conclave 2024 at St Joseph Engineering College was a three-day event organised during 18-20 September 2024. The opening ceremony was held at Spoorthi Hall at 9:30 AM. The event aimed to explore the latest technologies in academic research and how they can be applied in real-world situations. Rev. Fr. Kenneth Crasta, Director In-charge, presided the inauguration ceremony, and Dr. Arun M. Isloor, Professor and former Head of the Chemistry Department at NITK Surathkal, was the Chief Guest. The Guest of Honour was Dr. Purushothama Chippar, Principal In-charge and Dean of Research & Development. The event was convened by Dr. Felcy D’Souza, Librarian and Dr. Aldrin Vaz, Asst. Prof., Dept. of ECE and Ms. Smitha D’Souza, Asst. Prof., Dept. of Chemistry hosted the inauguration. The program began with a prayer, and Dr. Felcy D’Souza welcomed the guests and participants. Dr. Arun Isloor spoke about the importance of research in new fields, and the inauguration ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Aldrin Vaz.
Day 1 (18 September 2024)
· Session 1: 10:15 AM - 11:30 AM Dr. Arun Isloor discussed Research Success and Ethical Practices. He explained how innovation comes from original ideas and strategic planning, and stressed the importance of honesty in collecting and reporting data in research.
· Session 2: 11:45 AM - 1:00 PM Dr. Santhosh K. V. from MIT Manipal talked about the Publication Metrics and Ethics. He explained how researchers can use the publication metrics to plan and manage their work while following ethical guidelines in publishing.
· Oral Presentations: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Ø Dr. Dayakshini presented on AI-Driven Breast Cancer Detection, explaining how AI is used to detect early signs of breast cancer by analyzing medical images.
Ø Dr. Harivinod N. spoke on Computer Vision for Autonomous Driving, focusing on how AI helps cars “see” and understand their surroundings to drive themselves.
Ø Dr. Hareesh B. gave a talk on Remote Sensing and Its Applications, discussing how satellites and drones gather data for environmental monitoring.
The day ended with 10 research scholars presenting their work during a poster session.
Day 2 (19 September 2024)
· Session 3: 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM Dr. Mallikarjun Angadi from NITK Surathkal conducted a hands-on session on Mendeley, a software tool for managing research papers and citations, making it easier to write academic papers.
· Session 4: 11:45 AM - 1:00 PM Dr. Rekha P. D. from Yenapoya Research Centre led a session on Scientific Paper Writing and Publishing, sharing tips on how to select the right journals and respond to reviewers.
· Oral Presentations: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Ø Dr. Prakash Pinto gave a talk on Entrepreneurial Mindset, exploring the mindset needed to recognize opportunities, take risks, and innovate.
Ø Dr. ESTR Chandra Sekhar B. discussed Multifunctional Cementitious Composites, advanced construction materials that can self-heal and store energy.
Ø Dr. Shreeranga Bhat talked about the benefits of combining research from different fields in his presentation on Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Research.
The day also included another round of poster presentations by 16 scholars.
Day 3 (20 September 2024)
· Session 5: 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM Group Captain K. K. John, Retired Indian Air Force, led an interactive session on Systematic Inventive Thinking, using the TRIZ method to solve problems creatively in engineering and innovation.
· Oral Presentations: 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Ø Dr. Ramananda H. S. presented on the Applications of Lattice Theory and Statistical Analysis, focusing on how statistics can be applied in research.
Ø Dr. Rajesh Kumar P. C. discussed Graphene-Porphyrin Hybrid Thin Films, highlighting their potential use in photonics and sensor technology.
Ø Dr. K. Jyothi Damodara spoke on Medicinal Chemistry and Electrochemical Studies, exploring how these fields can aid drug development.
The valedictory of the event was held at 4:00PM. Ms Priya Miranda, Asst. Prof., Dept. of ECE hosted the valedictory. The first place in the poster presentation was bagged by Dr Shrisha H S – Dept. of CSE on the work “Novel View synthesis: Generating new views of the objects through deep learning”, second place by Ms Sheetal Fernandes – Dept. of Chemistry on the work “Investigation of anticancer, antitubercular and antibacterial activities of Thiazole analogues: suy thesis, characterization and in silico analysis” and third place by Ms Ganavi KK – Dept. of Business Administration on the work “Influence of psychological biases on investing choices among individual investors in Mangalore city, Karnataka”. The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Purushothama Chippar, Vice Principal of SJEC.
