Hands-on Workshop on Web Scraping

A hands-on workshop on Web Scraping was successfully conducted by the Department of Computer Applications in association with IEEE Student Chapter and WIE Society, on 24th July 2025 with the objective of introducing participants to both the foundational and advanced aspects of web scraping techniques. The workshop was graced by eminent resource persons Dr. Prathviraj N and Dr. Raghudathesh G P from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

The session commenced at 9:00 AM. Ms. Priyadarshini, Assistant Professor, formally welcomed the participants and introduced the resource persons. This was followed by a brief address by the Head of the Department, who emphasized the relevance and growing importance of web scraping in today’s data-driven world.

The workshop materials were shared with the participants by the Convenor, Ms. Sumangala N, who also guided them through the setup of the required software environment to ensure active hands-on participation throughout the sessions.

The first session was handled by Dr. Prathviraj N Associate Professor Manipal School of Information Sciences, MAHE, Manipal, who provided a comprehensive introduction to web scraping. He explained the basics and significance of web scraping and gave a live demonstration on how to scrape static web pages using various tools and techniques. The session was informative and interactive, running until 11:00 AM.

Following a short tea break, the second session began at 11:30 AM, led by Dr. Raghudathesh G P, Assistant Professor - Senior Scale, Manipal School of Information Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. He focused on dynamic web scraping, discussing its complexities and solutions. He demonstrated several live case studies, showcasing real-world examples of scraping data from various websites. His session continued until 1:30 PM, keeping the participants engaged with practical insights and demonstrations.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks. The resource persons were thanked and felicitated with mementoes in appreciation of their valuable contributions. The event provided the participants with an enriching learning experience and a solid foundation in web scraping concepts and practices.
