The Department of Civil Engineering organized a one-day industrial visit to Dairy Industry and Dairy wastewater Treatment Plant at Kulashekara, Mangaluru on 24 March 2018 for VIII Semester students who have opted for Industrial Wastewater Treatment as an elective subject. Faculty members, Mr Prashant Kurdekar and Ms Apoorva K V, accompanied the group of 29 students.
The main objective of the visit was to offer exposure to onsite manufacturing processes and make create awareness of various wastewater treatment processes in the dairy industry. The students were taken to the manufacturing unit, where the processing of milk and manufacturing of other milk products take place. Mr Nagraj, KMF Staff explained the process of collection of milk in the receiving stations, laboratory testing of milk for its quality, pasteurization and sacheting/packing of milk based on its fat content and storage of milk in cold storage rooms. He also explained regarding the manufacturing process of other milk products like curd, ghee etc.
The different treatment processes carried out in the treatment plant were screening, grit removal using grit chamber, biological process like UASBR, aeration process, primary sedimentation, sludge thickening, sludge digestion and sludge drying beds. Mr Raikar, in-charge of the sewage plant explained about the activity happening in the treatment like screening process, aeration process, and sludge handling process etc. He also answered the queries of the students regarding the different treatment processes.
The visit was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure of manufacturing process and treatment process, which can help them in their academics and future career enhancement.
